Brighton based Kins (Thomas Savage, Queline Cartwright, Alex Knight, and Rob Walters) dropped their self-titled debut album on July 8th. In a recent interview, AMBY spoke with bassist Rob Walters to learn more about the LP and the band. Take a look as we discussed their favourite songs off the record, artwork, and their love for Electric Avenue.
AMBY: Hello Kins, how are you and what’s the band been up to lately?
Kins: We’re all good thanks, just been preparing for our UK tour this month.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of Kins in one word?
Kins: Alex – Pensive, Jacky – Transient, Thom – Agressive, Rob – Broken.
AMBY: Your self-titled LP was released back in July. Which songs off the record are your favourite?
Kins: Demand the Deal and Absblurd. We played Absblurd live recently and it made a lady cry, I’m not sure how I feel about that.
AMBY: What inspired the album artwork for Kins?
Kins: It’s a photo taken by Karl Amman – nothing inspired it, we just found it on the internet.
AMBY: The new video for Aimless covers an interesting story. What message were you trying to convey with the film clip?
Kins: Whipping people with belts, using guns to settle scores and blowing sh*t up never really solves a problem. And tends to leave a mark.
AMBY: Where did the name Kins come from? And what other names had you considered for the band?
Kins: Came from an old nickname of Thom’s ‘Thomkins’.
AMBY: Which Kins lyric is your favourite?
Kins: “You give me your word, I’ve never heard anything so absurd” I’ve met / worked for a lot of dick heads who this applies to.
AMBY: What are your rehearsals usually like? Does the band have a set time to practice or are rehearsals more off-the-cuff?
Kins: Definitely more off-the-cuff. We tend to procrastinate a bit too; Bottles of wine, Rage against the Machine jams etc.
AMBY: What’s the best release of they year?
Kins: ‘Kurt Vile – Wakin On A Pretty Daze’ has to be up there, it was the soundtrack to my spring/summer while working
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Kins that nobody knows yet?
Kins: When we’re driving back from gigs and finally get back to Brighton, we habitually blast out Eddy Grant – Electric Avenue.
Thank you Kins, for giving us your answers!
