As Animals have just hit half a million views on their debut music video for I See Ghost (Ghost Gunfighters). The French duo is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Frédéric Grange and singer-songwriter Zara Desbonnes, who came together over their deeply-rooted love of music. As Animals will release their self-titled debut LP on March 3rd, and A Music Blog, Yea? got the scoop on what to expect in this recent interview.
AMBY: Hello As Animals, thanks for speaking with AMBY. What’s the band been up to lately?
As Animals: Hi, nice to be here. We just finished an important gig at one of the biggest French festivals called Transmusicales in Rennes. It was crazy !! Thousands of people. Good vibes. We are also preparing for our performance at Tarata, which is the main musical TV Show in France ;) We have a new music video to do, a tour starting in January and the album release after that. It’s very exciting!
AMBY: How would you classify your sound to your listeners?
As Animals: As Animals’ music is a mix between pop, rock, soul, electro, and tribal music! But there are also lots of strings and horns…it’s kind of difficult for us to explain or classify our music, our influences are very wide.
AMBY: You recently announced the forthcoming release of your self-titled debut LP. When creating the album, what was your ultimate goal?
As Animals: Yeah! The release is March 3rd in the US. When we create, not just music but in general, we always try to take pleasure in it. That’s the main goal for us. Creating is a way to express ourselves and a tool to communicate our emotions.
AMBY: What do you have planned to celebrate the release of the album?
As Animals: We plan to play live February 11th at “Café de la Danse” in Paris. In a more personal way:
Fred: Maybe a tattoo ;)
Zara: Partying the whole week!
AMBY: We’ve been playing your new track I See Ghost a ton. What’s the story behind the song?
As Animals: Thanks a lot! It’s a vision of the dark side of what can be a relationship (romantic, friendly…) The song talks about a person in whom you trust, and that changes his face in the end. It’s about protecting ourselves.
AMBY: Where did the name As Animals come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?
As Animals: Ahaha, very good question! It’s been pretty difficult for us to find a band name. It’s pretty characteristic of what we are. Instinctive people. “As Animals” is also a track on the album that we love.
Fred: I remember discussions about “Vendome”.
Zara: and “Roadkilly.”
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
Zara: Kindly Nutters.
Fred: That’s two words…
Zara: Who cares ;)
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to record an album with, who would you pick?
Fred: Adele, Lana Del Rey, and Bono
Zara: Rick Rubin, Damon Albarn, Björk
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
Fred: Arcade Fire, ‘Reflektor’
Zara: Lorde, ‘Pure Heroine’
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about As Animals that nobody knows yet?
As Animals: Before starting a show, we always try with the band to do a human pyramid ;)
Thank you As Animals, for giving us your answers!
