Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Little Matador

Little Matador

When I received an email from Snow Patrol’s guitarist Nathan Connolly, I was thrilled to read about his new project. I quickly pressed one of the links he sent within the email and listened to a track off of their four song EP. My reaction? I was blown away with the band’s loud, “sexy”, and melodic tracks. Little Matador is comprised of Dave Magee (LaFaro), Gavin Fox (Idlewild), Binzer Brennan (The Frames), Troy Stewart (The Windsor Player), and Nathan Connolly. The quintet is also now confirmed to support Band of Skulls at their London Shepherds Bush Empire date on March 27th, 2014. We recently caught up with Nathan to talk about all things Little Matador, including tour highlights, the story behind their name, an upcoming album, and Ostrich farmers.

AMBY: Hi Nathan, thanks for speaking with AMBY today. What has the band been up to lately?

Little Matador: Thanks for having me. We just finished a couple of tours around the UK and Ireland. We had a great time, we really couldn’t wait to get out and play these songs.

AMBY: How would you describe Little Matador’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Little Matador: It’s loud and dirty, but still melodic and sometimes aggressive oh, and I think it’s SEXY!

AMBY: You recently played shows with Jimmy Eat World, then had gigs in Glasgow, London, and one in Belfast with Queens of the Stone Age. What have been some of the tour’s highlights?

Little Matador: Yeah, it was great to get those support slots and we had a great response at all of the shows, which I guess is the highlight, for people to engage and appreciate a band that they haven’t heard of before or don’t know the songs. Thanks to them for that.

AMBY: What’s the significance behind the name Little Matador? And what other names had you considered for the band?

Little Matador: An amazing documentary I seen a few years back. I just loved the imagery and I’m also an amazing bullfighter myself.

AMBY: Your album is due for release early next year. Is there a working title or release date yet?

Little Matador: The album will be out in the first half of the year and is self-titled. We are working on release date. Also really looking forward to getting back out on tour.

AMBY: The band released an EP with four songs off the upcoming record titled Liar Liar. What inspired the artwork for the EP?

Little Matador: We had Angelique Houtkamp, a dutch artist, design the album cover. Im a big fan so was thrilled that she agreed to do it. We took part of that artwork for the EP.

AMBY: Liar Liar, the EP’s lead track, is an excellent song. What’s the story behind it?

Little Matador: It’s a angry song. I wrote it when I was angry. People can make up there own minds as to what it’s about. It was recorded in a few takes and we used the first one so there is a lot of honesty and aggression in there.

AMBY: What did you listen to growing up, and what have you been listening to lately?

Little Matador: I grew up around a lot of classic rock in my very early years then Pixies, The Clash, Tom Petty, Depeche Mode, Nick Drake to name a few. Lately, I’ve been listening to Deap Vally – Sistronix, Emilana Torrini – Tookah, Sebadoh – Defend Yourself, Foy Vance – Joy of Nothing, Wooden Shjips – Back to Land, More Than Conquerors – Everything I’ve Learned.

AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?

Little Matador: Arctic Monkeys – AM. QOTSA – …Like Clockwork. Biffy Clyro released a great record. Tough question, too hard to answer.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Little Matador that nobody knows yet?

Little Matador: Dave Magee is also an Ostrich farmer.
