Magistrates are a funky and lighthearted Essex quartet who “like making really good music and even better breakfast”. Their second single When We Are Apart is a groovy track matched with a humourous video, resulting in some eighties throwback magic. Dig into our recent interview with Magistrates where we discuss their eclectic dance-pop, dream jam sessions, drinking milk seductively, and more.
AMBY: Hello Magistrates, welcome to AMBY! What’s the band recently been up to?
Magistrates: Hello, well we have been writing a lot of music and recording. it is great to craft music and push yourself musically. We have enjoyed the process.
Other than that we have been living in the future.
AMBY: How would you classify your sound to all your listeners?
Magistrates: We had a discussion about this other day. In the past people have tried to say we are disco or soul dare I say it funk. I don’t know what we do however we write music that has positivity and love in there and either gets your neck moving or your legs doing things you didn’t know they can do.
AMBY: Who inspires your eclectic dance-pop?
Magistrates: Well you kind of have decided right there in that question what sound we make. Eclectic dance pop! I like that!
We are inspired by stories. Whether that is life love or music it all tells a story. We have always enjoyed dance music but I don’t like to pigeon hole dance music and what is thought be dance. Talking heads are a wonderful band that created music that makes you want to dance without being a dance music band. It’s the things between the beats and the space that inspires me. To have room.
AMBY: When We Are Apart is such a groovy track! What’s the story behind the song?
Magistrates: Being apart from something and wanting to be with that. internet dating is such a odd concept. Love is such a natural thing and has been for eternity and the idea of a machine computing love is the complete opposite to the natural element of it. I’m not saying the story behind the song is 100% about internet dating, the song is about pure emotions and how that affects you when you don’t have that.
AMBY: What was the best moment you had while recording the video for the single?
Magistrates: Too many however I think Andrew drinking milk in such a seductive way will always be burnt on my brain.
AMBY: Where did the name Magistrates come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?
AMBY: Who would your dream jam session be with?
Magistrates: I may differ to the other guys but for me my dream jam would be with Can. We are all big Can fans.
AMBY: If you could choose to have your music featured in any movie or show, which would you choose?
Magistrates: Good question! Are we talking current or anything ever? If current……movie would be a future Al Pacino movie or a Wes Anderson movie….. and if all time……a show would be something classic like Twin Peaks or Seinfield. I don’t know we shall leave that to the people that put music in tv and movies.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
Magistrates: For me I really like the Arcade fire record. I also really enjoyed Gregory Porters album liquid spirit and latest White Denim album. James Blake album was great as well.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Magistrates that nobody knows yet?
Magistrates: Nobody knows that Magistrates actually all lived in the wood cabin next to Justin from Bon Iver whilst he recorded his first recorded. We were all practicing log lifting and tree climbing. Big year for all of us.
Thank you Magistrates, for giving us your answers!
