I’m really glad that I have those super awesome friends that I have, because those friends always show me bands and songs I probably wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. One of the bands I might had missed (which would have been a real shame) is the Birmingham based band Modern Minds, but luckily I got introduced to their singer Luke at a gig I went to last December. I listened to some of their songs shortly after that and since then am a very big fan of the Indie-Rock band. However, now it is AMBY’s turn to inform you about Modern Minds and the interview below does that perfectly.
AMBY: Hello Modern Minds, please introduce yourselves to AMBY.
Modern Minds: Hi AMBY I’m Luke from Modern Minds, a 6 piece blend of soulful indie with deep thoughtful lyrics.
AMBY: What’s the band been up to lately?
Modern Minds: Well we sold out ‘The Institute’ in Birmingham December and it was a real experience. I suppose were all still coming down from that night. Were back in the studio and we’ve got a brand new single called ‘What You Waiting For?’ coming out very soon which will be available on iTunes, Spotify ect. We’ve also just been sorting out dates for our debut UK Tour and getting some festivals sorted.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your song People?
Modern Minds: Yeah its one of our favorites to play live. Well the song itself is pretty much about a state of mind. Its about being locked in a relationship and kind of losing touch with everyone. Then as soon as it breaks apart you come hurtling back into society trying to find your feet by having blowouts and doing things that make you feel great at the time.
AMBY: Is there an EP or album in the works?
Modern Minds: We could tell you but then we’d have to kill you.
AMBY: Where did the name Modern Minds come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?
Modern Minds: To be honest were not really sure where the name came from. We came up with lots of names such as ‘The Underground’ and ‘Blox’ which were all dismissed quicker than they were thought up. One night we were all in our lock up and Mccabe just said the words ‘Modern Minds’. I don’t know if it was the level of intoxication or that its just a brilliant name but it stuck!
AMBY: What do Modern Minds think of the state of modern music?
Modern Minds: I suppose it depends on what you class as Modern Music. There’s some very talented musicians/singers/bands out there. It wouldn’t be fair to say anyone was rubbish, especially in our band as everyone has a completely different taste in music. Would just end in a massive disagreement between everyone. I don’t think there’s any problems with the state of music. I think the problem falls into the hands of the people who interpret what they think proper music is.
AMBY: Does hailing from Birmingham have an influence on your sound? And if so, how?
Modern Minds: I don’t think it does personally. Like I said before we all have completely different tastes in music and that shows especially when we’re writing. There’s so many things that shouldn’t work that somehow do.
AMBY: Which other artists from Birmingham should we keep our eyes on?
Modern Minds: There’s so many good bands all across he country. This year I’ve got my money on Superfood, I think Ryan and Dom are unbelievable guitarists and Dom’s voice is great. Also you’ve got JAWS, God Damn, Faith, Curb……. there’s far too many to choose from. Outside of Birmingham I really like SULK from London. I think their album ‘Graceless’ is what I wished
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
Modern Minds: God this years been so good for music its hard to choose. I’d say my top 5 for this year in no order have got to be: – Foals – Holy Fire – SULK – Graceless – Peace – In Love – Courteeners – Anna – Modern Minds – Atmosphere
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Modern Minds that nobody knows yet?
Modern Minds: We have a new member. He’s our 3rd guitarist called Adam Bills! Seems a good time to announce it ;)
Modern Minds have released two new tracks, “What You Waiting For” and “Girl at the Back of the Lens” on the 24th of January. Those songs are absolute genius and show how much potential and class the very promising band has. Both tunes are very powerful and they’ll make you turn the volume up as loud as you can, they’ll make you dance and sing along to them. I really can’t wait to see the awesome lads live soon and am very excited about their plans for the future.
