Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ SHY NATURE

Lie Back
is an ambitious new single with a danceable beat, jangly guitars, and luring melody. The track is out now (via Kissability) and can be purchased on iTunes, or bought on limited addition black cassette here. Now, who’s the band behind the music? Answer: London alternative quartet SHY NATURE. In a recent interview, we spoke to the band’s William Blackaby to discuss upcoming singles, the story behind their name, the annoyance of trends, and their alter-ego. Want to know more? Read away:

AMBY: Hey there, SHY NATURE. Welcome to A Music Blog, Yea?. Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

SHY NATURE: Hello. We’re a four piece rock band from London in the UK. I’m Will, and I sing and play guitar.

AMBY: How would you describe the band in one word?

AMBY: Your new single Lie Back came out on February 17th. What’s the story behind the song?

SHY NATURE: It’s about overcoming trivial fears. The energy throughout, and slightly agitated sound of the guitar parts, relate to the way people spend a lot of time worrying about simple things. Inspiration came partly from a trip to the dentist!

AMBY: The Shy Nature EP was released back in September. What’s next as far as EP or album recordings go?

SHY NATURE: We took a week out on a farm in Wales at the start of 2014, and are constantly recording at home, where we’ve produced everything we’ve released so far. We’d love to release an album – though expect a few more singles and maybe an EP from us first.

AMBY: Where did the name SHY NATURE come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?

SHY NATURE: Many were considered. Most were pretty questionable. ‘Shy Nature’ was loosely inspired by the way songs are outlets for things people can’t or don’t speak out about in person.

AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?

SHY NATURE: Our drummer Matt had a New Years Eve party with a ‘Yacht Rock’ theme, so made a playlist of smooth artists – Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross etc. It’s stayed on pretty heavy rotation ever since.

AMBY: Which trend in music do you find the most annoying/irksome?

SHY NATURE: Trends as a whole. That artists styled and sounding a certain way appear based on ‘demand’ feels like a let down for listeners. Genuine music that people connect with usually comes from a genuine place, and focusing on trends more than promoting quality just dilutes the amount of meaningful stuff out there to listen to.

AMBY: Who would your dream jam session be with?

SHY NATURE: Bernard Purdie, who played drums for Steely Dan and a bunch of classic soul artists – we’ll let this video explain why.

AMBY: Which city in the world would you absolutely love to play?

SHY NATURE: Loads of places. I guess New York would be one. None of us have been, and as a band we admire many artists who have lived and performed there.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2014?

SHY NATURE: Our UK tour and single release, summer festivals, more touring, more recording, more releases… this year should be a lot of fun.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about SHY NATURE that nobody knows yet?

SHY NATURE: The band has an alter-ego which we used a few times back in early 2013 for live practice, before we’d really played any proper shows. The name? We’ll keep that a secret.

Thank you SHY NATURE, for giving us your answers!
