Brooklyn outfit Secret Someones (Bess Rogers, Hannah Winkler, Lelia Broussard, and Zach Jones) recently announced new March tour dates in Texas with A Great Big World and a hometown show with their buds Jukebox the Ghost! Ahead of the shows, A Music Blog, Yea? caught up with the band to discuss dream jam sessions, bleeding profusely, working on a full-length album, an a secret involving That Thing You Do!. Although I could go for quite some time with our awesome interview topics, I’ll just let you read the interview below:
AMBY: Hello there, Secret Someones! Please introduce yourselves to the world of AMBY.
Secret Someones: Hey there AMBY. You’re looking mighty fine today. We are Secret Someones — Bess on guitar, Lelia on bass, Hannah on guitar & keys, and Zach on drums (we all sing).
AMBY: How would you describe the overall feel of the band in one word?
Secret Someones: MUSIC-Y.
AMBY: The harmonies and lyrics in Never Stop Love are charming. What’s the new single about?
Secret Someones: We wrote this song as though we were speaking to someone who is not accepting of the LGBTQ community. We wanted to express that all love is equal and undeniable. Nobody has the right or the power to control who someone else can love.
AMBY: That song was written for Everyone Is Gay and the money goes to fund The Parents Project. How did you get involved with the project?
Secret Someones: We have been friends with Kristin and Dannielle for years and have always been fans of the work that they do for the LGBTQ community. They asked us to contribute a song to the compilation and we were so happy to support their new project.
AMBY: Your self-titled EP was released back in November. Is there an album in the works?
Secret Someones: Yes! We will begin working on the full length album this month and we are hoping to release it sometime this year.
AMBY: What is the craziest thing to happen to Secret Someones while playing a show?
Secret Someones: Zach once played so hard that he bled profusely all over his drums. It was gross and also cool.
AMBY: Where did the name Secret Someones come from, and what other names had you considered for the group?
Secret Someones: We got the name Secret Someones from a Laura Veirs song. Coincidentally that song is called Secret Someones. We love her music and it was the first idea we had that really fit. The other band names we thought of will remain in the vault.
AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence, which will reach the whole world. What would you say?
Secret Someones: Be nice to each other.
AMBY: Who would your dream jam session be with?
Secret Someones: Stevie Wonder, Ringo Starr, David Byrne, and Robyn.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Secret Someones that nobody knows yet?
Secret Someones: We all cried together while watching That Thing You Do! The secret is out.
Thank you Secret Someones, for giving us your answers!
