After wrapping up a sold-out US tour last month, Courtney Barnett returns for a new run of dates this summer; performing at North American festivals including Coachella, Northside Festival, Firefly, NXNE, and others. Her critically acclaimed album The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas will be released via Mom + Pop on April 15th. To learn more, AMBY caught up with Courtney Barnett to discuss the making of her debut album, carving vegetables into flowers, David Bowie, and a funny story that occurred in grade four.
AMBY: Hello Courtney, thank you for speaking with AMBY today. What have you been up to lately?
Courtney Barnett: Heya! We just got off a 24 hour flight to London. But in the last year or so, we done some cool tours, went overseas, released our second EP, and I’ve been writing the majority of my debut album!
AMBY: Your most recent EP, How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose, is absolutely lovely! What’s the meaning behind the title?
Courtney Barnett: Thanks! Well, my aunty is a world-class chef and used to give me and my bro little cooking classes when she was looking after us. I remember one thing we did was cutting cookies into cool shapes, and another was carving vegetables into flowers.
AMBY: With two EPs under your belt, what’s next as far as recording goes?
Courtney Barnett: Next we are making an album. We’ve just recorded one song off it and are gonna release it as a Record Store day 7″ release.
AMBY: We’re thoroughly enjoying Avant Gardener. What inspired the song?
Courtney Barnett: It’s a light-hearted reflective piece on the time I had a panic attack and ended up in hospital.
AMBY: Does hailing from Melbourne have an influence on your sound? If so, how?
Courtney Barnett: I guess a little bit, but not really. I reckon any person is influenced by their environment in some way. I think my sound is influenced by all the different bands I’ve liked over the years. Melbourne is where I live and all my friends are, so I normally end up writing about it.
AMBY: Which other artists from Melbourne would you recommend our readers check out?
Courtney Barnett: The Drones, Atolls, Spinning Rooms, Royston Vasie, Batpiss, Jen Cloher, The Finks, New Estate, Dick Diver, Boom Gates, Fraser A Gorman, Dan Kelly.
AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the music industry for one day, who would it be?
Courtney Barnett: David Bowie.
AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?
Courtney Barnett: Stephen Malkmus! And Deerhunter.
AMBY: What has you most excited for 2014?
Courtney Barnett: Excited for lots of traveling, and mostly making a new album.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Courtney Barnett that nobody knows yet?
Courtney Barnett: I pretended to faint once in grade four to get out of class.
Thank you Courtney Barnett, for giving us your answers!
