DZ DeathraysBefore releasing their award-winning debut album Bloodstreams in 2012, DZ Deathrays released two EPs and their first performances were at Brisbane house parties. Now, the band’s sophomore LP Black Rat is scheduled for release on May 2nd and they just returned from SXSW. Comprised of Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley, the Brisbane thrash-pop duo never let their fans down when it comes to explosive tracks packed with energy and attitude. Wanting to know more about the record, we spoke with vocalist and guitarist Shane Parsons to discuss creating a more melodic record, throwing curve balls, and vomiting.

AMBY: Hello DZ Deathrays, cheers for speaking with us today. What’s the band been up to lately?

DZ Deathrays: Mostly getting our second album together and plotting out our touring for 2014. The record is done and been sent off to get pressed. Which leaves us with the touring side of things!

AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?

DZ Deathrays: Chilled.

AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential DZ Deathrays?

DZ Deathrays: Dollar Chills, No Sleep, The Mess Up.

AMBY: Your sophomore album Black Rat is scheduled for release this May. What can fans expect to hear from the record?

DZ Deathrays: It’s a little more melodic from the first one. Still got the riffs but they wrapped around some almost nursery rhyme style melodies. I also think it is a bit more concise  this time round.

AMBY: When creating the album, what was your ultimate goal?

DZ Deathrays: Mostly to try get the songs sounding interesting enough tone wise for repeat listens.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your single Northern Lights?

DZ Deathrays: It was just the first song that really came together quick so we decided to record it and get it out there. It was a change of pace for us so we wanted to throw a curve ball for everyone.

AMBY: Who would your dream jam session be with?

DZ Deathrays: Josh Homme would be pretty fucking rad.

AMBY: Which other artist from Brisbane should we keep our eyes on?

DZ Deathrays: Dune Rats, Violent Soho are already making big waves but they are gonna be huge soon.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about DZ Deathrays that nobody knows yet?

DZ Deathrays: Simon vomited last night…
