Norwegian indie-pop quintet HighasaKite know how to draw a crowd and loving fanbase with their expansive sound and layered instrumentation. Comprised of Ingrid Helene Håvik (on vocals), Trond Bersu (drums), Øystein Skar (synths), Marte Eberson (synths), and Kristoffer Lo (guitar, percussion and flugabone), the band officially release their record Silent Treatment worldwide on April 7th. To learn more about the LP, we caught up with Øystein Skar to discuss touring memories, their album’s title, dark vibes, and jazz.
AMBY: Hello HighasaKite, welcome to AMBY! What have you been up to lately?
HighasaKite: Thanks! Lately we have been touring Norway with our new album. We have played all over the country, and it is so nice to finally play the new music for people. Besides the touring we played a concert in London, applied for a US-visa and been playing on a Norwegian talk-show. Life`s good.
AMBY: How would you classify your sound to all of your listeners?
HighasaKite: It’s hard to classify the genre, but hopefully the listeners will find the sound rich, dreamy and beautiful. We try to make music with many colors and vibes.
AMBY: You’re currently on a tour which takes/took you through Europe and SXSW. What were some of the highlights?
HighasaKite: South by southwest is always a pleasure. We are from cold Norway so the Texas sun suits us well! We are also looking forward to see San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas in the US, and Switzerland in Europe.
AMBY: What is one of your most memorable touring experiences?
HighasaKite: Hmmm.. That’s a difficult question because we always have so much fun on tour. Last time in LA we had a FANTASTIC. Korean barbecue that our guide showed us, besides that touring in Northern Norway is really beatifull. But its hard to say in because we try to really enjoy every place we visit.
AMBY: You release your debut album Silent Treatment in April. What’s the significance behind the album’s title?
HighasaKite: It’s about the quiet fights that happens behind closed doors, and problems in relationships in many ways.
AMBY: Looking forward to the release of Silent Treatment; how would you describe the overall feel of the record?
HighasaKite: I personally find it quite dark and strong in the vibe, but also with bright elements. But the overall feel is maybe “serious music played with a optimism”?
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to record an album with, who would you choose?
HighasaKite: Oren Ambarchi, Sigur ros, Boubacar Traore.
AMBY: Which other artists from Norway should we keep our eyes on?
HighasaKite: Please check out Emilie Nicolas, Kari Harneshaug and The fjords.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
HighasaKite: Hang with friends and relax. I’m also heavy into pool-playing.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about HighasaKite that nobody knows yet?
HighasaKite: That we are educated jazz musicians?
Thank you HighasaKite, for giving us your answers!
