With the recent release of their new self-titled album, London foursome Let’s Wrestle took the time to catch up with A Music Blog, Yea?. Check out the entire interview below as we spoke with vocalist and guitarist Wesley Patrick Gonzalez to discuss a band who fascinates him, Trash TV, the new record, and how he can actually sing.
AMBY: Hey Let’s Wrestle, welcome to AMBY! What’s the band been up to lately?
Let’s Wrestle: We just released a new album recently, other than that I got a new job, Max (Guitar) has been on tour with his other band Proper Ornaments, Darkus Bishop (Drums) joined COP which is Luke’s (Bass) band and Luke also works at the same pub as me.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Let’s Wrestle: Crazy Sexy Cool, like the TLC record.
AMBY: Your latest album Let’s Wrestle was released last month. Which songs off the LP are your personal favourites?
Let’s Wrestle: My favourite three are all in a row Care For You, Tied Up and Don’t Want To Know Your Name I think of them all three together as they all seem to encapsulate what I wanted to do for this record the point where I felt my “vision” was realized (sorry to sound like a wanker).
AMBY: What was one of the highlights you had during the recording experience?
Let’s Wrestle: My favourite bit was getting all the strings and horns on probably when we did the horns and got a Saxophone solo on care for you, Max from Yuck was playing trumpet and he looked really excited and said it sounded like Diamond Dogs (Bowie)
AMBY: Your influences have been noted as The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and The Beach Boys. If you could hang out with any one of your influences for a day, who would you choose?
Let’s Wrestle: The Beatles any day, nobody has exciting to me or just generally fascinating I distrust people who don’t like them and think they are generally just liars.
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place and who would be in the line-up?
Let’s Wrestle: Beatles (Circa 1966), Prince (Circa 1985), Dr John (Circa 1968), Judee Sill (Circa 1972) At the UFO on February 17th 1967.
AMBY: If you could have your music featured in any television show or movie, which would you choose?
Let’s Wrestle: I don’t really know, it’s something I’ve never thought of. The last show I got into was True Detective, I’m really into Trash TV and watching my generation of British morons pissed in Spain those are my favourite shows maybe one of them like ‘ The Magaluf Weekender’.
AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?
Let’s Wrestle: The new Metronomy, Cate Le Bon, and Connan Mockasin records have been my favourite new releases, but I generally listen to older stuff and at the moment a lot of soul stuff like Al Green, Ann Peebles and Gloria Jones.
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
Let’s Wrestle: Right at the end of last year I recorded the first few songs of some solo stuff I’m working on looking more towards a lot of soul records, it’s all on piano and I’m hoping to do some more recording soon, as for Let’s Wrestle we are going on tour in the UK next month and I’m very excited for that it’s been a long time since we’ve toured so should be fun.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Let’s Wrestle that nobody knows yet?
Let’s Wrestle: I can sing! People don’t seem to think that but I will be properly putting it forward in future.
Thank you Let’s Wrestle, for giving us your answers!
