Brothers Johnny, Jesse, Dylan, and Danny are KONGOS — a rock and roll Johannesburg foursome based in Phoenix. Releasing their latest album Lunatic back in January, we caught up with the band to discuss the album’s name, the success of their track Come With Me Now, festival season, and being handsome. Read the entire interview below:
AMBY: Welcome to AMBY, KONGOS! What’s the band been up to lately?
KONGOS: Thanks! We’ve been touring and doing some acoustic promo sessions supporting our album Lunatic.
AMBY: Your record Lunatic came out earlier this year. While recording the album, what was one of the best moments you had?
KONGOS: Probably falling upon the breakdown accordion section in Come With Me Now while messing around in the studio.
AMBY: When it comes to the title, what is the significance behind Lunatic?
KONGOS: Really, we liked the way it sounded haha. Also there’s a reference to that word in the lyrics of “I’m Only Joking”
AMBY: Congrats on your Come With Me Now video hitting one million views! With the success of that track, how would you describe success for yourselves as a band?
KONGOS: Playing shows to rooms full of people who know your songs. And hopefully over time those rooms get bigger and bigger!
AMBY: Do you find the dynamics of being brothers makes working together easier, or do you butt heads more often because of it?
KONGOS: Both, we’re very close so we can be brutally honest with each other – it leads to butting heads and creativity.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
KONGOS: Johnny – handsome, Jesse – handsome, Danny – handsome, Dylan – handsomer
AMBY: You recently announced your first Canadian show of 2014 which is Osheaga. If you could curate your ultimate concert line-up, who would be part of it?
KONGOS: Tinariwen, Bob Marley, Jackson Browne, QOTA, Daft Punk, The Beatles
AMBY: Which KONGOS lyric is your favourite?
KONGOS: “..It ain’t easy using only words” – This Time I Won’t Forget
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
KONGOS: Festival Season.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about KONGOS that nobody knows yet?
KONGOS: Most things…haha
Thank you KONGOS, for giving us your answers!
