Salt Lake City, Utah electronic duo Oh, Be Clever (Cory Scott Layton and Brittney Shields) recently caught up with A Music Blog, Yea? to discuss their song “Next To You”, video inspiration, trading places with Rihanna, and being fueled by food. Dive into the conversation below:

AMBY: Thanks for speaking with us today Oh, Be Clever! What’s the band been up to lately?

Oh, Be Clever: Oh man!! So much. We’ve been touring the West Coast for the last couple months and just finished playing SXSW and a couple shows in Los Angeles. Not to mention CONSTANTLY writing. That’s our main thing. Always be writing, no matter how chaotic life gets for us.

AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?

Oh, Be Clever: Cory: Drive, Brittney: Emotion

AMBY: Who or what influences the pure and raw emotion felt in your music?

Oh, Be Clever: Life experience. Stories told to me by others. I’m inspired by literally everything I see. Lyrics are CONSTANTLY floating through my brain. I’m a leo, so my life is generally a little dramatic, and that’s where a LOT of life experience comes in. ;)

AMBY: What’s the story behind your new upbeat, electronic track Next To You?

Oh, Be Clever: Cory and I experienced pretty gnarly break ups around the same time as one another. Have you ever been involved in a break up so difficult that it genuinely makes you question your sanity? Cory and I have. That kind of heartbreak is so unbearable sometimes, so we decided to get our crazy out in a catchy, powerful pop song. It was super cathartic for us..and still is every time we perform it. (Some people you just never really get over).

AMBY: When it came to creating a concept for the song’s new video, what was its inspiration?

Oh, Be Clever: The masks are representing masking emotion. Like…it could be anyone under that mask. When we reveal ourselves at the end, that’s vulnerability and just admitting that we’re hurt or (in Cory and I’s case) grateful to have that friendship after experiencing difficult trials together. Cory and I are best friends. Without him, I’d have lost it a long time ago. Without me, his life probably wouldn’t be nearly as fun. ;)

AMBY: What’s next as far as recording or releases go?

Oh, Be Clever: We have another single we’re set to release very soon. In fact, everyone should be seeing the song come to life within the next couple of weeks. We’re very excited about this one. We put an insane amount of emotion into this track.

AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the music industry, who would it be?

Oh, Be Clever: Well..that’s hard to say because we’re both so incredibly in love with where we’re at right now…BUT, if we had to answer, I would say…Eminem. That dude is SO talented, SO artistic, and is just CONSTANTLY killing it. That or Rihanna…cause she’s so hot and, from the looks of her Instagram, is always on a beach…and I love beaches.

AMBY: Which other artists should we keep our eyes on from Salt Lake City?

Oh, Be Clever: SLC is a MECCA for talented people..I couldn’t name just one. Luna Lune is ABSOLUTELY fabulous, The Moth and the Flame, Samantha Calmes and probably this band full of super young people called The Blue Aces.

AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?

Oh, Be Clever: We have SO MUCH to look forward to this year, I can feel it in my bones. LOTS of touring, LOTS of writing, LOTS of people to meet and LOTS of incredible opportunities. It’s an open door and we’re just excited to walk through it and see what it has to offer.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Oh, Be Clever that nobody knows yet?

Oh, Be Clever: Well I, Brittney, have a severe addiction that not many people know about. Its really hard for me to say this, but I literally have to PHYSICALLY pry my hands off of any Flamin’ Hot Cheetos bag I see. I am OBSESSED. And we’re both addicted to Subway. Obviously, food fuels everything in this band.

Thank you Oh, Be Clever, for giving us your answers!
