With an upcoming full-length set for release later this year, New York pianist, guitarist, and singer-songwriter Mikey Wax spoke with A Music Blog, Yea? to discuss his new single You Lift Me Up, major TV placements, house concert moments, and the new album. Read the entire interview below:

AMBY: Hello Mikey, welcome to AMBY. Please introduce yourself to our readers!

Mikey Wax: Thanks for having me! I’m a singer and songwriter from Long Island, NY. I play piano, guitar, sing, and I can do back flips. I do the first 3 things way better than the last thing though.

AMBY:How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Mikey Wax:I’ve always found it challenging to put my sound into words, but I’d say it’s pop music with a heartfelt/cinematic touch.

AMBY: We’re really enjoying your new single You Lift Me Up. What’s the story behind the song?

Mikey Wax: I came up with the main intro riff one day just messing around at the piano. I probably would have forgotten it had my manager not stopped me mid-jam and said “record that!” The rest of the song came along fairly easy. I knew I wanted to talk about facing challenges and the people who love and support you during hard times. To me, I was definitely writing some kind of thank you to all my fans and family who have supported me as I’ve grown my career.

AMBY: You’re set to release a full-length album on Universal/Toucan Cove this year. What can fans expect to hear from the record?

Mikey Wax: The album is a mix of a few different styles that I think sums up what I’ve done previously and where I’m at now as an artist. I grew up inspired by artists like the Beatles and Billy Joel, both of who stylistically you never knew what you were  gonna get with each song. I think being a songwriter first, I’ve kind of developed that trait too.  A few songs on the album lean towards pop and rock, while a few others are a bit more folk and country. I hope in the end it all falls under my general “sound”, and my fans find something they love and relate to.

AMBY: Is there a title for the album yet, and when is the set release date?

Mikey Wax: The album title is really the most creative thing I’ve ever come up with. Ready for this? I’m calling it… “Mikey Wax” :)  The label and I felt  a self titled album was the way to go in hopes of introducing my music to a bigger audience. The album will be releasing in June, the exact day to be determined.

AMBY: You have received major TV placements on shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Pretty Little Liars. But, if you could have your music featured on any show or film, which would it be?

Mikey Wax: I’m always very thrilled and humbled when any show wants to use my music. If I had to pick, I’d say it would be pretty awesome to have a song performed by a character on ABC’s ‘Nashville’ or danced to on ‘Dancing With The Stars’.

AMBY: Having performed 250 plus house concerts in your fans living rooms, there must be some good stories. What’s one of the funniest thing to happen to you at a show?

Mikey Wax: There are so many funny and amazing stories from all the house concerts it’s difficult to pick. One that sticks out right now is when mid-show my microphone and keyboard stand both pretty much collapsed. There were too many people attending to perform completely acoustic, so we all looked around the house for hangers, wires, strings, tape, etc, to basically keep the mic stand in place and keep the keyboard stand elevated. It was a truly authentic house concert.

AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?

Mikey Wax: I listen to a pretty big variety of music. Lately, I’ve been into John Legend, Avicii, City and Colour, Fitz and the Tantrums.

AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?

Mikey Wax: I’m just really excited to release a new album and get back on the road to perform for all my fans.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Mikey Wax that nobody knows yet?

Mikey Wax: My close friends would probably tell you I’m a little bit of a hypochondriac! But I suppose every artist is a little crazy. Right?
