Concert Review: Gabrielle Aplin @ El Mocambo

Gabrielle Aplin charmed the audience on Saturday night with her melodic vocals and soulful tunes. She performed songs from her debut album ‘English Rain’ which featured hits ‘Panic Cord’, ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’, and her cover of ‘Power of Love’.

I had the pleasure of seeing Gabrielle Aplin live on her only Canadian date on her North American tour. Eager fans waited outside the venue for hours, waiting to see the British singer. When the doors opened, there was no rushing but you could feel the anticipation of the fans.

The opening act that comprised of Justin and Brendan from former Canadian band, Everlea, entertained the audience with their music including the songs ‘Hold Me Down’ and ‘Alone’. For the last few songs the lead singer/guitarist brought out a ukulele which brought the crowed to screams. After they finished their set you could hear mingling between strangers and the excitement waiting for Ms. Aplin.

You could see the set up crew coming on stage with a teapot? She’s not your average performer, that night she showed her British charm.

Gabrielle came/pranced on stage with a smile and a giggle. She opened the concert with her song ‘Panic Cord’. When she shook the front row’s hands she said that it made her feel like Beyonce. During her set she had conversations with the crowd in the intimate venue. She continued to dazzle the crowd with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’.

She mentioned during her performance that it was the first time she’s performed alone since her first UK tour in 2009-2010, it made her really feel like a solo artist. Her band remained in New York, where she was the previous day.

As her show came to a close she thanked everyone for coming saying she didn’t think anybody would show up tonight, the crowd put away those fears with a thundering applause and screams to which she covered her face with her hands.

For her very last song of the night, she did something I’ve never seen before she made a deal with the crowd; if we could all sit down, she would get off the stage and perform in the audience. The crowd did not hesitate to follow. When she got to the middle, she brought us all to silence and with a spotlight, she performed her new song ‘A While’.

When the night ended, the fans were buzzing with excitement and stood to the side waiting to meet Gabrielle. When she came out, we were all influence by her clam manner and waited patiently to meet her. This night will be in the history book, I even got to meet a fellow AMBY enthusiast!
