Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ DROWNERS

DROWNERS
Sporting addictive jangly post-punk tracks, New York’s DROWNERS hooked fans back in 2013 with the release of their Between Us Girls EP. With (what I feel is safe to say) one of the most highly anticipated records of 2014, the foursome released their debut album Drowners on January 28th. While on tour with Temples, we had the opportunity of speaking with frontman Matthew Hitt! Read our new interview below as we discuss first concert experiences, bank balances, Morrissey, and more.

AMBY: Hey DROWNERS, thanks for speaking with AMBY today. What have you been up to lately?

DROWNERS: Hello ! We’re currently on our tour with Temples at the moment. I’m backstage at First Avenue in Minnesota as I type… We’re still all kind of recovering from Coachella as well. We had, possibly, too much fun.

AMBY: Your self-titled album was released back in January. What was the experience like recording it?

DROWNERS: We did it with our friends Johnny T and Gus Oberg who produced it. It was actually recorded in May last year so my memories of it are a little hazy. It took about 3 weeks and was a pretty relaxed affair. We’re all friends and the studio doesn’t have any windows so it was a bit like being trapped in a space ship with your mates.

AMBY: We’re loving your charming new single Luv, Hold Me Down. What’s the story behind the song?

DROWNERS: Um, I wrote that sort of in the middle of the batch of songs that makes up the record. It’s about wanting to be oppressed by desire I suppose… the usual…

AMBY: You’re currently on a US tour with Temples. What are you most looking forward to regarding being on the road?

DROWNERS: It’s been great. They’re all super nice dudes and we’ve been having a lot of fun.

AMBY: What was your first concert experience like? Do you feel it had an impact on your music?

DROWNERS: Um, I saw Stereophonics in Wales in 1999 when I was about 11. I think watching The Monkees on Nickelodeon around the same time had a bigger impact on me, in terms of wanting to be in a band.

AMBY: Which other artists from New York should our readers keep their eyes on?

DROWNERS: We’re pals with a bunch of really good New York bands… Skaters, Wet, Cable and Dirty Fences would be a good place to start…

AMBY: What do you do for fun when you aren’t making music?

DROWNERS: That’s kind of all I do. Otherwise I’m boozing at some pub. Jack skateboards and draws, Erik does photography… all art based stuff I guess.

AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the music industry for one day, who would it be?

DROWNERS: Whoever has the biggest bank balance. I’m broke right now.

AMBY: We share a love for all things Morrissey. Which Smiths song would you say describes you best?

DROWNERS: Panic. Been getting a lot of panic attacks on tour lately…

AMBY: If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?

DROWNERS: Jack: Loyal, Erik: Mellow, Joe Brodie: Fuckingfunny.

AMBY: And lastly, tell us something about you that nobody knows yet.

DROWNERS: We’ve had to answer this question a few times so we’re running out of secrets…Um… Joe has never been to Brooklyn. #manhattan
