Post-punk band Eagulls are an electrifying five piece delivering upbeat and attitude-packed tracks. Hailing from Leeds, the band (comprised of Liam Matthews, Mark Goldsworthy, George Mitchell, Henry Ruddel, and Tom Kelly) released their self-titled debut album in March of this year. Before coming to North American to play Toronto’s NXNE festival, we caught up with them to discuss nicknames, breaking bones, thriving from chaos, and David Bowie.

AMBY: Hey Eagulls, thanks for speaking with us today! How would you describe each member of the band in one word?

Eagulls: George – Grey, Liam – Lizard, Tom – Troll, Henry – Silence, Goldy – Legend

AMBY: Your self-titled debut album came out in March. What was the highlight of recording the LP?

Eagulls: The highlight was when we finished and sighed with relief. A lot of blood sweat and maybe some tears went into this album, so completing it and releasing it felt like a big accomplishment.

AMBY: The album is methodical in melody and we love the dark lyricism. What inspired the songwriting on this record?

Eagulls: During the writing for the album we were all struggling with the everyday mundane day to day routine of full time work whilst playing shows and writing an album. The more we wrote the more we became aware of our lives around us and this in effect created a darker output. There is a certain degree of Optimism to be gained from the pessimistic sound, a so called wake up call to overcome the mundane.

AMBY: The band have carved out a reputation of chaotic live shows. What’s the craziest thing to happen to Eagulls while on stage?

Eagulls: We once had an EP release show where one person broke their ankle and another broke their collarbone or rib?? We thrive from chaos, so the more there is to be seen the better we will play and be heard.

AMBY: After SXSW and your nine shows, you went straight into the Franz Ferdinand stadium tour. What was that experience like?

Eagulls: We were all in a state of Limbo. We literally got to the first stadium and went straight onstage after traveling from SXSW, so we were in a dreamlike state so to speak. We haven’t stopped since and now were on our 50th gig and we have been on tour for 55 days.

AMBY: Which of your influences would you love to have a jam session with?

Eagulls: I’d like David Bowie to come into a studio with us and kick us all up the arse to put us in line. Then we would write an incredible record and bath in a 1980’s style bath filled with gold coins and wizard dust.

AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence, which will reach the whole world. What would you say?

Eagulls: DADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADA

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Eagulls that nobody knows yet?

Eagulls: I was born into the world with the name Aaron Mitchell. But, then my dad nicknamed me Georgie and when I went to kindergarten school people asked, “whats your name”? in which I would reply “Georgie”. So I changed my name to George. I still don’t know why he nicknamed me Georgie though?!
