Olympic Ayres are making waves with their cross-genre, sun-kissed, synth-filled sound. Hailing from Sydney, their style fits perfectly into the Aussie nu-disco scene that’s making the world dance — falling into the same bracket as Panama, Clubfeet, and Hayden James. Their most recent single Take Flight forms part of their upcoming Leisureplex EP, which is due to be released in the coming months. A Music Blog, Yea? recently caught up with Kamaliza and Mmiiddii to discuss the new EP, an excellent song written in fifteen minutes, basketball, and great haircuts. Here’s what they had to say…
AMBY: Welcome to our site, Olympic Ayres! What’s the band been up to lately?
Olympic Ayres: Thank you! we’ve been busy recording tracks for our upcoming EP titled “Leisureplex” (due out second half of 2014).
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
Olympic Ayres: Kamaliza – crooner , Nathan – hairy
AMBY: Your Facebook description says “we do many things, we span the genres, they call us the genre spanners”. We know it’s a tough one, but how would you describe your overall vibe in three words?
Olympic Ayres: Beats, rhymes, and life.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your new single Take Flight?
Olympic Ayres: Take Flight was birthed from a day of writing and not coming up with anything good, then this song came out of nowhere and was written in about 15 minutes … was trying to write from a child’s perspective and was hugely inspired by Manila by Seelenluft.
AMBY: The single is taken from your forthcoming debut EP Leisureplex! Why should fans should be majorly psyched about the new release?
Olympic Ayres: We are really excited about releasing these new tracks, we’re producing the EP ourselves and using all analogue equipment during the recording experience which is a first for us … its sounding more live and loose and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
AMBY: Does hailing from Sydney have an influence on your sound? If so, how?
Olympic Ayres: We rep Sydney quite a bit (e.g the ‘Magic’ film clip) … It’s such a great place to live and we are exposed to so many different cultures and scenes. This in turn has a huge effect on the DNA that makes up Olympic Ayres … we try blend styles within our music
AMBY: What does the band do outside of music for fun?
Olympic Ayres: I’ve been playing a bit of squash and Kamaliza is getting into basketball … also love traveling and will be going to Japan very soon!
AMBY: Which bands or artists have you been listening to lately?
Olympic Ayres: Jungle have been on repeat non-stop lately as well as the new Chet Faker record … new Metronomy record and Oscar Key-Sung EP have been getting a lot of spins
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Olympic Ayres that nobody knows yet?
Olympic Ayres: We both have great haircuts.
Thank you Olympic Ayres, for giving us your answers!
