Rush Midnight is the moniker of Russ Manning, a Brooklyn-based artist creating dance-evoking indie-pop tracks. In support of the release of his debut self-titled album, Rush Midnight is currently on his Spring North American tour and will play Toronto’s Adelaide Hall on June 14th with Nightbox. Ahead of the show, A Music Blog, Yea? had the chance to speak with Russ to discuss playing live, listening to demos, and how his songwriting keeps evolving — enjoy!
AMBY: Hey Rush Midnight, welcome to our site! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Rush Midnight: Hey I’m Russ Manning aka Rush Midnight and I like to travel and party.
AMBY:You’re currently on a Canadian tour with Nightbox. What have been some of the tour’s highlights?
Rush Midnight: The highlight show has been New York. RM is based in Brooklyn and the crowd was warm and excited.
AMBY:Which songs are your favourite to play live right now?
Rush Midnight: Currently my favorite songs to play are “Fix Me Up” and “One You’ll Outrun”. They are two of the more rock-y on the album.
AMBY: Which three items could you not live without while on tour?
Rush Midnight: Toothbrush, microphone, and some tanktops.
AMBY: Being the reason you’re touring, we want to discuss the release of your self-titled debut album. Congrats on its release! What’s your favorite memory from the writing or recording process?
Rush Midnight: My favorite memory include riding around LA with my friend/collaborator Rico while listening back to the demos. After it was handed in I traveled down to Mexico and rented a car specifically so that I could listen to it while driving around.
AMBY: What influences can be found on the record that might not be apparent to a listener?
Rush Midnight: I love house music as well as rock (60s-80s mostly). I try and draw inspiration from everything; The Police, Nu Shooz, SBTRKT, Genesis, etc..
AMBY:Does being a Brooklyn-based artist have an influence on your sound? If so, how?
Rush Midnight: Having grown up in Brooklyn and having had parents who have great taste in music are my biggest influence. At this point in life I often considering moving somewhere warmer for the winters. I think my sound will stay the same but ideally my songwriting keeps evolving.
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place and who would be in the line-up?
Rush Midnight: My dream concert is Primavera festival in Barcelona. I’ve played there once before and it blew my mind. I’d love to play alongside Thin Lizzy, The Clash, and Blondie.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Rush Midnight that nobody knows yet?
Rush Midnight: Rush Midnight is only just beginning folks!
Thank you Rush Midnight, for giving us your answers!
