With his new EP Ain’t No Money out July 20th (via Grey Sky Records) and the recent announcement that he will be supporting Sam Smith on his upcoming UK Tour this Autumn, the rest of 2014 is looking to be rather bright for Irish singer-songwriter Daniel James. In the middle of all the excitement, we caught up with the artist to discuss dancing with the devil, his parents’ record collection, touring with Hozier, and Funkadelic — enjoy!
AMBY: Hey Daniel, cheers for speaking with us today. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Daniel James: Hello A Music Blog, Yea?. I’m Daniel James, pleased to meet you all.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your latest track We Are The Fire?
Daniel James: ‘We are the Fire’ is a track for the working people, for the unseen heroes in our society that work unrecognised and underpaid. It touches on mass immigration in several countries mostly settling into the USA. From Belfast to Mexico the song covers plenty.
AMBY: The song is taken from your Ain’t No Money EP, out on July 20th. What’s your favorite memory from the writing or recording process?
Daniel James: Well, I went to this studio in Wales with my producer and friend James. We had this amazing outhouse conversion studio… The dude that owns it has been putting it together for 17 years. Some of the gear he had was out of this world. The whole experience away from London, drinking wine and making music was just great.
AMBY: What’s the significance behind the EP title Ain’t No Money?
Daniel James: Simply, it’s called “Ain’t No Money” because that is the lead track of the EP, which touches on greed, power, money, and dancing with the devil.
AMBY: I loved reading that you were brought up on your parents’ record collection of David Bowie, Van Morrison, and Motown. Going back to your childhood, what’s one of your fondest music memories?
Daniel James: Yeah, I had a great childhood. I had been to two Diana Ross concerts before my 10th birthday. Soul music was played throughout my youth. There has been a Clavinova electric piano following my parents around for years and that’s where I guess it all started.
AMBY: You recently finished a UK/European tour with Hozier. What’s the funniest thing to happen to you while performing on stage?
Daniel James: Em…30 minute set times don’t bring a whole deal of comedy but… I ask people to sing a chorus to one of my songs. You know engage and that… I was in Glasgow teaching it to the lovely Scots. One lively dude filled to the brim with Whisky was getting really into it… so I asked him to join my band mid set. He obliged but I still haven’t heard from him since. If you’re reading this, you’ve missed 3 practices.
AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?
Daniel James: When the Stones met Muddy Waters… I would like to be a fly on the wall and listen to Funkadelic talk to each other – at any given time.
AMBY: Lastly, tell us something about Daniel James that nobody knows yet.
Daniel James: I can fly like Peter Pan on Fridays and I don’t eat green vegetables.
Thank you Daniel James, for giving us your answers!
