Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Zeus

Toronto indie-rock foursome Zeus release their new record Classic Zeus today! Featuring heartfelt pop tracks and their infectious harmonies, we couldn’t wait to discuss the funky release with the band’s Carlin Nicholson. Read our brand-new exclusive interview below as we spoke about special slow motion videos, Paul McCartney’s band, and harmonies…

AMBY: Hey Zeus, welcome to our site. What’s the band been up to lately?

Zeus: Well as recent as the Friday past – we we’re rehearsing a small package of cover tunes to play at Mikes wedding. Members of Zeus, Bahamas, Golden Dogs, and Taylor Knox we’re ready and raring to bring the celebration to a peak-was a great time. Highlight: Neil going hand held on ‘You’re the inspiration’ by Chicago.

AMBY: You soon release your new album Classic Zeus! What was the most exciting and challenging aspect of making it come to life?

Zeus: Truly picking 11 tunes from a pack of over 20 was a bit of a challenge but it ended up kind of working itself out. It was tricky to know when we we’re done.. with some friendly guidance and outside perspective from some trusted musical friends we came to what is now Classic Zeus.

AMBY: What influences can be found on the new album that might not be apparent to a listener?

Zeus: We never really analyze that stuff too much – generally I’m surprised, usually pleasantly – by hearing what other people hear in the music. It’s always a whirlwind of variety when we get together in the van for trips etc, but there is always a constant. This record has a lot more synth and instrumental hooks than previous albums .. I feel like we are drawing from sound inspirations more than anything these days.

AMBY: This new record features your airtight harmonies. How did harmonies become an important feature on the album?

Zeus: Purely by necessity of the tune. We generally just put a song down and work it until it’s right. If by the end it is harmony laden or guitar or percussion .. it just happens naturally. I (Carlin) mixed the entire record this time around which was a first for Zeus – and I certainly took a lot of time blending the harmony and lead vocals so that I could have them way up in the mix. Neil had an interesting approach to a number of his tunes featuring a ‘buddy’ vocal – this can sometimes be harmony, or call/response or simply unison. We are working hard to get all the harmony parts into the live set and with newly added member Jason Haberman we have a great opportunity to bring the album to the people in as full a flavor than ever before. This reflects onto our older material as well.

AMBY: Describe your dream gig and who would be on the bill with you.

Zeus: We would be Paul McCartneys band.

AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the music industry for one day, who would it be?

Zeus: Paul McCartneys Band.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Zeus that nobody knows yet?

Zeus: We have a series of very special slow motion videos that we film during our personal time. No one may ever know of these but if you run into us at a gig or on the streets, twist us a bit and you may get to see what these silly boys do with our spare time.

Thank you Zeus, for giving us your answers!
