Concert Review + Photos: Vance Joy and Sam Cash @ The Phoenix – Toronto

Vance Joy
Need a way to ward off the Halloween scares? How about cozying up to the likeable Aussie charm of Vance Joy? Count your blessings Toronto, because you got a double dose of the scruffy man from Down Under.

Local songster Sam Cash was a last minute replacement to the ailing Jaymes Young. Usually accompanied by a full band, Cash sans The Romantic Dogs got the ‘background noise’ treatment by the chatty Phoenix crowd. Regulars of the ‘Shoe or Cameron House are familiar with Cash’s cathartic energy on stage, which was understandably restrained in an acoustic setting. Regardless, Cash entertained those who listened, and even debuted a new song.

How do you follow up one of the biggest songs of 2013? In the case of a certain Vance Joy, releasing an affable debut containing more loveable gems. While the bulk in attendance were expectedly casual fans, waiting for ‘Riptide’, you could see the other half mouthing words to the other songs from Dream Your Life Away. Despite the back-to-back performances, Vance Joy was astoundingly spot on, making his signature falsettos a delightful listen.

Being selected as supporting act for Taylor Swift’s tour, and a debut full of radio friendly singles, Vance Joy’s exponential rise is just a glimpse away. Achieving that junction of being radio ready and being quality folk is a short list, and now you can add his name as well.
