Toronto vocalist and songwriter Cold Specks recently kicked off her North American tour, in support of her latest album release Neuroplasticity. After her European Tour and ahead of hitting the road to travel North America, we spoke with Al Spx to discuss funny tour experiences, falling in love with Montreal, and quintessential touring items. Here’s what she had to say:
AMBY: Hey Al, welcome to our site and thanks for speaking with us today. What have you been up to lately?
Cold Specks: Hi there. I just wrapped up a European tour. I’m currently attempting to re-adjust.
AMBY: What was that experience like?
Cold Specks: Our show in London was fabulous. It was definitely a highlight. Such an electric feeling in that room. We are all very excited to head back. Hamburg was fun. Our drummer Loel ended up getting locked in his room. The hotel had to break the door down after 2.5 hours of him being stuck. It was all very amusing.
AMBY: What’s been the biggest influence on your music; whether artist, writer, musician?
Cold Specks: I’d say people like Nina Simone, Doris Duke, James Carr… I adore them and I’m sure it’s seeped into my singing style.
AMBY: You soon release your new album Neuroplasticity, congrats! What was one of the highlights you had while creating the record?
Cold Specks: We spent a few months in Montreal recording. I’d say the highlight for me was being in Montreal. I ended up falling in love with the city just as I fell out of love with London. I’m now living in Montreal and am very happy.
AMBY: When it comes to the album’s title, what’s the significance behind Neuroplasticity?
Cold Specks: It refers to a creative re-wiring process. The title implies an aesthetic change.
AMBY: Which three items are quintessential to have while on the road?
Cold Specks: Red lipstick, black dresses, a touch of gold.
AMBY: Where would your dream festival take place and who would be in the line-up?
Cold Specks: I love Roskilde festival. I’d love to go back. Dream line-up? Hmm…. David Bowie, Nick Cave, Massive Attack, Kate Bush.
AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?
Cold Specks: I’m trying to think of a saucy band in a saucy situation and I got nothing.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Cold Specks that nobody knows yet?
Cold Specks: I beat Oprah for an Emmy the other day. Saucy.
Thank you Cold Specks, for giving us your answers!
