Alanna Royale: 6 members, 5 beards, 2 horns, and 1 lady. A pretty interesting combination, no? Well, take it from us — it’s a combination that works. Creating funky and raunchy soul music, Alanna Royale’s debut album ACHILLES is a release that’s guaranteed to not only move your hips, but also urge you to move your lips and sing-along with her melodic tracks. In a recent feature, we caught up with Alanna to discuss her all-time favourite gigs. Purchase ACHILLES here, and enjoy the piece written by her below:
1 – Bonnaroo 2012
This was the first time we played a major festival and it was just an all-around mind blowing experience. to be part of such a huge event in an atmosphere of total positivity. it was crazy. being from nashville, it still had a hometown feeling and our friends and fans were so supportive. we had shirts made with our name, stage, and set time on it and when we hit the stage the crowd was full of people wearing them. just felt so good!
2 – SouthSounds Fest
We were supposed to play this fest in mobile and on the way our rear tire blew, cutting some lines in our van at the same time. we stuck on the side of the road and were definitely going to miss our set. a woman who was just a volunteer for the fest (hi mona!) offered to make a three hour round trip to come get us. she also brought someone with a truck and hitched our trailer. they drove us right to the fest and we hit the stage like it was nothing. that’s mobile for you. incredible music fans.
3 – Austin City Limits Flood Out
We were slated to play sunday of ACL and beginning saturday night there was an insane storm that caused flash floods in zilker park. so the last day of the weekend was canceled but we ended up getting booked at another austin club with jc brooks and the uptown sound. the place was packed out by the time we got there and phoenix ended up coming and watching our whole set. we met so many incredible people and the night ended up being a ridiculous blast.
4 – Trombone Shorty, Asheville, NC
First of all, having the pleasure of watching trombone shorty and his band up close and personal is quite a lesson. they are such incredibly talented musicians and they keep it fresh and live, night after night. we did a short run with those guys and asheville was the first stop. we fucking LOVE asheville and playing to an insanely packed club who was there to jam out, it was just incredible.
5 – EP Release Show, Nashville, TN
This was the moment that we knew for sure that we were on to something really awesome. our EP felt like it took forever to get out but in reality, we were just crazy excited to get it out. the night of our release, the basement was absolutely jam packed. we’re talking like, we could barely get on stage it was so packed. all of our friends and peers in town were there. the love was real and we had no idea the extent to which nashville had really embraced us. those of us living in nashville are so lucky to be part of this community.
