As William Doyle – better known as East India Youth – begins the process of writing the follow-up to the Mercury Prize nominated ‘Total Strife Forever’, it seems like a good time to revisit one of the highlights on the debut record.
As an acid – techno powerhouse of a track, it is no surprise that ‘Hinterland’ is one of the most compelling singles taken from the record. With its slow descent from ambient glitches, into a strong and infectious kick beat, ‘Hinterland’ cements itself as a staple in club mixes for years to come (or at least until Doyle releases his next album).
‘Hinterland’ is completely opposed to the tracks it’s surrounded by on ‘Total Strife Forever’ – ‘Dripping Down’ and ‘Heaven How Long’, with its lack of melodic vocals. With the contrast of both types of tracks, however, Doyle emphasises the beauty of ‘Hinterland’ as an extraordinary dance break between two emotionally affecting songs.
‘Hinterland’ is a phenomenal electronic gem that stands out on ‘Total Strife Forever’.
