Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Districts

The Districts
Currently on a North American tour in support of their recently released debut record A Flourish and a Spoil, Pennsylvanian foursome The Districts will play Toronto’s The Horseshoe Tavern tonight. Ahead of their performance, A Music Blog, Yea? gave the band’s Braden Lawrence a call to discuss touring essentials, meeting Fred Armisen, and their debut network TV appearance. Here’s what he had to say:

AMBY: Hey Braden! Thanks for having a chat and congrats on the release of your new record A Flourish and a Spoil.

The Districts: Thank you!

AMBY: No problem. Tell me a bit about the album and your experience recording the debut.

The Districts: It was probably the best recording experience we’ve had. It was really smooth and we had a really good time.

AMBY: As soon as I went onto your website, I was caught by the quote “we write honest music and are passionate about doing so.” The honesty aspect really shines through on this new record, especially in its lyricism. Has it always been easy for you all to wear your hearts of your sleeves and share personal lyrics?

The Districts: That’s Robbie there, with him being good at writing and all.

AMBY and The Districts: [laughs]

The Districts: I think he’s really good at expressing himself and how he feels; he isn’t afraid of what people might think.

AMBY: In support of the album, you’re currently on a rather large tour where you just finished playing some shows in Europe. What was that experience like?

The Districts: It was amazing. We played Berlin, Paris, and London and they all sold-out and the shows were super fun. It was pretty amazing, those few shows.

AMBY: And you kicked off the North American leg right after playing those cities. When it came to packing for this tour, what were some quintessential items you brought with you?

The Districts: Lots of contacts, toothpaste, headphones, my computer, iPhone charger, lots of underwear, and socks. Basic things for me [laughs].

AMBY: I saw a photograph of you meeting Fred Armisen which was pretty cool.

The Districts: Yea! It was awesome.

AMBY: What have been some other fun moments you’ve encountered while on the road?

The Districts: Nothing really as crazy as playing Late Night – that was a whole different level of being crazy and surreal. There have been lots of strange situations as we’re getting to see a bunch of new cities. There are definitely a bunch of weird people we meet.

AMBY: Weird people… as in fans?

The Districts: It’s hard to – a lot of the time I’m not very good at picking specific parts out of a tour because I think of touring as a whole. It kind of blends together. But we’ve met some characters.

AMBY: I really enjoyed your recent performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. That was the band’s first network TV appearance. How nerve-racking was that for you?

The Districts: It was pretty nerve-racking! We were there all day, though, so by the time we played we were very excited. We did a French TV show when we were in France, so that kind of prepared us for what to expect with all of the cameras and all of that. We were pretty ready and knew what to expect.

AMBY: To rid those on-stage nerves, does the band have any pre-show rituals before playing a show?

The Districts: We all warm up our vocals to Jamie Wigginton.

[whole band laughs in background]

The Districts: We also stretch a bit and we chant and get weird. It was definitely still really nerve-racking, though. I was almost more nervous that Fred Armisen was right by us than the fact that we were on TV.

AMBY and The Districts: [laughs]

AMBY: You looked pretty stoked in your photograph with him.

The Districts: Yea. It was funny because I didn’t have to focus on the TV part because it wasn’t live, so we could mess up and re-do everything.

AMBY: What’s your favourite film or show of Fred Armisen’s?

The Districts: Ohhhh, we’re all big Portlandia fans.

AMBY: Nice!

The Districts: I love it.

AMBY: You’re slowly starting to announce some festivals which you’ll be playing this summer. If you could curate your own festival, who would be in the line-up?

The Districts: Oh man. If I could get my own festival, let’s see… I’d get Dr. Dog up on that stage! Tame Impala, St. Vincent, and The Strokes would all be there. I want to see the band Ought.

AMBY: From Montreal?

The Districts: Yea, that would be cool so I’d put them in there. We could throw some Flaming Lips up in there!

AMBY and The Districts: [laughs]

AMBY: Well, to wrap things up, what would you say is the best part of being in The Districts?

The Districts: The fact that this is what I get to do. The fact that I’m not not being in this band.
