It’s a big return for Best Coast. After signing with Harvest, Capital Records’ subsidiary, the Los Angeles outfit are ready to release California Nights, the follow-up to their Fade Away EP (2013) and The Only Place (2012).
They have also shared the video for their first single “California Nights”. The aptly title dreamy video is saturated with picturesque California landscapes, sunsets, and cacti. It features vibrant, vivid colours and double-exposed shots of sunsets, with scenes of cactus plants and palm trees (and even the odd shot of a tired cat).
The song is distinctly a little more daring and fierce than the lax, sun-soaked surf pop we’re so used to from Best Coast – scorching layers of fuzzy guitar and ethereal vocals from Bethany Cosentino. When talking about the inspiration for the album title Cosentino mentions “In L.A., or maybe just personally to me, when the sun sets — I feel like there is a large sense of calmness in the air,” adding, “I feel like everything that happened to me prior in the day, whether crappy experiences or good ones, at night, it all goes away and I sink deep into this different kind of ‘world.'”
California Nights comes out on May 5. Check out the video below.
