Essex exiles Egyptian Blue first caught our attention with the utterly captivating “Venus Fly Trap” from their “Coma Chain” EP in late spring. Like The Jesus and The Mary Chain with the feedback turned down a notch it was a perfect introduction to the four piece who comprise of Leith Ambrose (vocals/guitar), Andy Buss (guitar/backing vocals), Luke Phelps (bass) and Tom Beloit (drums).
“Do You Think Your Worth Your Soul?” followed at the tale end of summer, a dark, bluesy affair you could envisage as the theme music for a Saturday night TV show in a parallel universe where capital punishment is the main entertainment (perish the thought – still, beats X Factor). A video accompaniment has taken a while, but it has been worth the wait. Filmed in Brighton and directed by Chris Wade of Dog Brain Studios, the inventive video channels voodoo in bizarre and macabre directions as the bandmates meet their fate.
With live dates coming up at The Rep in Ipswich on 18th December and The Victoria in Dalston on the 19th and more gigs lined up in the new year Egyptian Blue are a band definitely to look out for in 2016 and beyond.
