Holed up while another winter storm swept through town, my mood immediately lifted when an email from fledgling label My Little Empire Records sent a slice of summery pop straight into my inbox in the shape of “Staying Awake” by Bristol based four piece Why We Love. The second single from their forthcoming “The Boy You Knew” EP we’re delighted to give it an exclusive premiere on AMBY today.
“Staying Awake” is a track that’s a fresh take on that peculiarly British tradition of bittersweet indie-pop, in the vein of The Colourfield and Belle and Sebastian, with even a bit of the influence of The Kinks at play. But the mix of jangly guitars and vocal melodies create a style that is very much the band’s own, and very current for all the nostalgic nods to the past.
Why We Love are fronted by sister and brother Rachel and Joe Wellfair, who supply the vocals, bass and guitar, together with Matt Thomas on drums and Anthony Dodwell on guitar. The rest of the EP is made up of first single “Lucky One”, “Surrender”, “Hit the Ground Running (Away)”, and “When the End Came”. The follow up to their debut “Fake a Death” EP the band celebrate its release on 25 March with a show at Bristol’s Cube Cinema the following night.
