It’s rare that I find a band who outdoes themselves with each and every new track, but I did exactly that last July. Since then, I haven’t stopped grooving to this awesome SoCal band. Meet Private Island. They classify themselves as a beach groove rock band—and I have to say, they’re spot on with that description with their ambience is dreamy, pacific, and summery ambience.
Their debut EP, A Good Look, was released in 2014 and contained four cool, breezy rock tunes along with an intro track to set the mood. Last year, they released the first single from their upcoming EP (whose name has yet to be revealed) called “Enough.” The next and newest single, “Drugs” was released on February 12th.
Suitably named, this addicting track begins with stomping drums and melodic humming guitar. It continues with euphonic vocals singing vibrant lyrics such as: “Your vibe is straight from a myth / A color new to exist / How’d you bend time and space? / Making life slower paced.”
Recently, I spoke with vocalist Christian Lum about the new track. Here’s what he had to say;
“Instrumentally, ‘Drugs’ came from a jam session, which is where most of our music comes from. Lyrically, it’s about the similarities between love and being on drugs, from the trip itself to the withdrawals afterwards.”
Check it out down below and keep your eyes peeled for new music from Private Island coming soon! If you’re in the LA area, you can catch them on April 9th at the Lyric Theatre.
Until then, keep up with them here.
