Teen Commandments are a band who consistently churn out clever, danceable, synth-pop jams.
AMBY was first introduced to the Williamsburg foursome two years ago with their sassy single American Special – a song which now sits among a list of my favourite tracks of all time.
It was a delight to recently discover that Teen Commandments carry that same quirky-pop charisma onto their new funky release Big Old Brain, which we’re thrilled to premiere on AMBY today.
When recording the song, the band tried to keep the track’s parts natural and airy, leaving Big Old Brain to explode with art-funk grooves and a hint of contagious new wave. When asked about the track, Teen Commandments shared with AMBY;
“Big Old Brain comes from a different place than most of our tracks. We wanted to record a song with a live, lose feel– basically more like our performances. Lyric-wise, Big Old Brain is a kind of mantra. I believe that we are all fundamentally unknowable. I believe that secrets govern all of us. I don’t know what it all means!
Now back to working on our upcoming EP– details are still coming together, but we have 4 or 5 brand new tracks in the works, tight, super super funky synth pop gems. Know any record labels? We’re ready to release with one.”
Want to witness this kinetic energy live? Teen Commandments will headline Knitting Factory in Brooklyn this Friday the 20th with support from Myths, LAKES, and Aarhus. Exclusively stream Big Old Brain on AMBY, follow updates from the band, and purchase tickets to the forthcoming gig below.
