It comes as something of a surprise to find that AMBY hasn’t featured Hampshire trio Blaenavon before, the more so since the now defunct As Elephants Are tipped them not once but twice on our pages back in 2013. After catching their scintillating late afternoon performance at The British Music Embassy at Latitude 30 at this year’s SXSW, we vowed to put that right.
The release of their video for “I Will Be The World”, the first track from their forthcoming debut LP, marks the perfect opportunity to do just that. Following up last year’s Miss World EP and its predecessor Koso, the LP will be released on Transgressive with Jim Abbiss on production duty. The video for “I Will Be The World” has been directed by breakout filmmaker Claes Nordwall and manages to meld the intensity of the band’s live performance with a style that might not be out of place at a Burberry shoot – with band member Benjamin Gregory one of their faces of 2016. There’s a real maturity in the writing and performance that bodes very well for the LP.
Just heading out of their teens the band are made up of Harris McMillan on drums, Frank Wright on bass, and the said Benjamin on guitar and vocals. The band have set up a string of festival dates over the spring and summer, taking in the likes of Latitude and Reading. If you can’t make it to a festival it’s well worth checking them out at one of their own shows this June.
