After listening to Jagwar Ma support Tame Impala at Manchester Arena earlier this year, I was eagerly anticipating seeing them headline Manchester Academy 2, and I was not let down. They brought a set full of anthemic psych tunes leaving the crowd longing for more.
The crowd was perfectly synced to the Sydney-based three piece who played a short, but incredibly effective set. Showcasing tracks from their new album Every Now & Then as well as some fan favourites, the band showed there was much more to them than psychedelic rock. In fact, at some points, they were more like a dance band making the packed out Academy 2 bounce in unison.
Highlights came from fan favourites Man I Need and Four as well as new tracks such as Loose Ends and Give Me A Reason. I could easily see why Tame Impala chose Jagwar Ma to support them on their massive arena tour earlier this year and I have no doubt that Jagwar Ma will be playing similarly sized venues in the not so distant future. Their songs are as captivating as they are catchy and it was one of the most atmospheric shows I have seen in a long while.
