Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Subways

An Interview with Charlotte Cooper of The Subways!

I never thought my obsession with Alright would evolve into such a hardcore love for The Subways. As each album of theirs is released , they get more energized and crazy spectacular. I had the pleasure to interview their bassist Charlotte Cooper! I admire her for how impeccable her bass playing is, how much she makes me want to sing along with her enticing backing vocals, and also the power and passion I  gather every time a Subways track comes on. To be enticed into the world of The Subways, check out our wonderful interview below!

AMBY: I’ve been admiring your bass playing in The Subways for years now! At what age did you start playing and how did that lead you into the band?

CC: It was Billy that taught me how to play when I was 14. We were going out at the time and Billy and Josh were already playing together, but they needed a bass player. It was a very natural start, just 3 bored suburban kids!

AMBY: Wow, you’ve know each other for quite some time! That’s amazing! Now, which three influences of yours would you love to have dinner with?

CC: Shirely Manson – I’ve met her a few times and she is a brilliant, lovely intelligent woman. Kylie Minogue – she’s been my favourite artist since I was old enough to know what music was. Courtney Love – she would come out with some outrageous comments, which would be hilarious after a few glasses of wine!

AMBY: Your last album Money and Celebrity is fantastic! Which tracks are your favourites and why?

CC:
I really like Billy’s lyrics and the Britpop feel to Pop Death. I love playing We Don’t Need Money… live as Josh’s drum beat makes everyone dance!

AMBY: We Don’t Need Money… is one of my Subways favourites! I noticed that live, you are insanely energetic! Even your Live At Abbey Road segment was kinetic. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you at one of your live shows?

CC:
It’s got to be one of Billy’s many stage diving incidents. One that sticks in my mind from recently was at a festival in Austria where Billy crowd surfed to the Front of House tent and dove off the top!

AMBY: With live shows in mind, you recently played Reading & Leeds Festival. What was that experience like and which bands did you enjoy seeing? We noticed your photo with Hayley from Paramore!

CC:
We’ve played Reading and Leeds 6 times now, but I think this time was my favourite. The crowd response was really quite mind blowing; they were not just singing the lyrics mega loud, but the riffs too! Paramore were in the signing tent before us so I decided to get there early, as I’m quite a big fan. Hayley was lovely enough to give me a photo!

AMBY: Must have been surreal, and the photo is great! If you could be any character in fiction, whom would it be?

CC: Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. Its my favourite novel and I love her bold, courageous, gutsy strong character. I also like the idea of broodily stalking over the moors in a long skirt!

AMBY: Your band has been dealing out great songs for a long time, so what are your future plans?

CC:
We have a few more shows in the UK and will then be starting work on the 4th album. We’ve had an amazing ride touring the third album, but now we have some time to get to work on new songs, and I think Billy will be producing this one himself.

AMBY: As always, I’m looking forward to the next album you release! Lastly, what’s something no one knows about each member of The Subways?

CC:
Me- I’m a triathlete in my spare time and I’m doing my first ironman next year. Josh- is pretty much a Historian and his specialist subject is Ancient Rome. Billy- is a keen reader and knows a lot about Literature.

The Subways are an incredible band and Charlotte will always be an idol of mine. If you haven’t had the chance to, take a listen to We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time off their latest album Money and Celebrity below. The track is a pure pleasure! And I’d like to say thanks again Charlotte, for giving me your answers!
