Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ PINS

PINS are an electrifying all-girl band and are about as ballsy as a crowd at a Judas Priest concert. Hailing from Manchester, England and recently releasing their their new EP LUVU4LYF, we decided to pin the members down to see what they’ve been up to!

AMBY: You just released your terrific, new EP LUVU4LYF, is there an album in the works?

Faith: Yes.

AMBY: How would you describe the sound of the band in three words?

PINS: Love hate sex.

AMBY: What is the craziest tour moment so far?

Lois: We’ve had some wild times with our holy trinity. That’s all I can say.

Anna: It’s not even started yet. Our van has broken down.

Faith: We’ll tell you post tour.

AMBY: You just shot a new video for Say To Me, tell me about the experience.

Faith: We worked with our friend Amy Watson, the video was filmed in my bedroom… She turned up on a Sunday morning with a bunch a people, a strobe light, a wind machine, a bag of feathers, and a pack of cigarettes and filmed the day away.

Anna: We were in Faith’s room for 10 hours with a strobe light, a pack of cigarettes & an amazing production team. (Maker Project) It was very smokey & I don’t think that much strobe is good for anyone. I think it was worth it.

Lois: It was vinegary and smoky.

AMBY: LUVU4LYF is a wicked song, what is the story behind it?

Faith: Thank you. It’s an angry love song, half ‘I love you’ half ‘fuck you!’ I wrote it and recorded a demo of it at home one night during the Summer, it was one of those songs that just spilled out of me and when I had it down I immediately sent it to the other PINS and at the next band rehearsal we played it together and instantly knew it would be the next release.

AMBY: How would you describe the songwriting process?

Lois: Depends on the song, but usually we work on songs collectively.  Someone will bring an idea in and we all write our parts around that, then we spend weeks re arranging it til we’re happy with it.

Faith: I spend my spare time at home recording demos, some make it as PINS songs, some don’t. I try and read a lot, just lyrics, poems, short stories (I have a shot attention span) – this helps with writing lyrics for PINS songs. My bag is always full of scraps of paper with lyrics or song ideas scribbled down.

Anna: My favourite songs are usually the ones we jam out in our practice room. Someone will start playing something & others will join in & then it just happens such as Say to Me.

AMBY: What are the three albums that changed your life?

Anna: Arcade Fire- Funeral. It made me get a bit angry/rebellious.

Faith: The first time I heard Nevermind by Nirvana was kinda life changing, it was the first time I was like ‘WHAT IS THIS?! I need to know right now!’….. My boyfriend and I always talk about ‘perfect albums’ so far we are pretty much decided on the self titled Suicide album, all the Velvet Undergrounds back catalogue and I think The Modern Lovers studio album is pretty perfect too.

Lois: Dookie by Greenday.  I’m not saying it’s the best album ever, but it made me want to play guitar.

Lara: Um, probably something really maudlin and drippy, like Songs Of Leonard Cohen or Blue. Something Pins tell me off for playing on the road.

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck with in an elevator?

Faith: I’d like to be stuck with the BRMC or Alex Turner, I don’t know about least.. it’s harsh.

Lois: Woody Allen. I don’t know for least.

Anna: Most: Scarlett Johansson, Least: Woody Allen

Lara: Most: Janeane Garofalo. Least: Also gonna go with Woody Allen.

AMBY: What is the best part of being in an all girl band?

Faith: Making records, playing live, traveling, meeting new people.. all these things are obviously amazing especially when you are sharing the experience with three other women.

Anna: Sharing clothes, painting each others nails, plaiting each others hair.

Lois: Femidoms.

AMBY: What is the worst part?

Lois: There is no worst part of being in PINS.

Faith: Agreed.

Anna: Not being able to get in front of the mirror.

AMBY: What trend in music do you find most annoying?

Faith: I don’t think I notice them too much.. Not enough to annoy me anyway.

Lois: All music has a purpose. trends are interesting, not annoying. I like seeing the new trends develop and how each new pop genre is a reaction to the previous one.

Anna: I find it annoying- people worrying about trends.

AMBY: What’s your proudest achievement to date?

Anna: 10″ Vinyl in the record shops.

Faith: Having our music on a piece of wax makes me proud, its a physical representation of how far we have come in a year. I looked through my diary the other day and was reminded of all of our achievements and adventures and what a wild times we have had together.

AMBY: Tell me something about each member that nobody knows.

Anna: I’ve got 3 nipples. Now everybody knows.

Faith: I got put in jail once.

Lara: At school they thought I had petit mal epilepsy but I was just a dreamer.
