Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Lovelife

An Interview with Lee Newell of Lovelife!

I’ve been a fan of Lee Newell’s for some time now, so discovering he had a new band, Lovelife, was quite the delight. The duo from England moved over to Brooklyn, NY to create electric, dynamic and atmospheric tunes. Being a fan of Lee and Ally Young’s work, there were a few questions I had for the band. Vocalist Lee Newell graciously took the time to answer some of them, and this clever and funny interview was the outcome!

AMBY: You and Ally have recently formed Lovelife, how did the band come about?

LN: Ally was producing my last bands second album. We were in the studio for 6 or so months and in that time wrote a bunch of stuff together. We thought, lets give it a name and play some shows. So we did.

AMBY: How has being in New York enhanced your creativity compared to being in England?

LN: I don’t know if it’s enhanced it. I do feel like the music we’ve been writing out here has been affected by living in Brooklyn though. New York is the sort of place that encompasses you. You move within it’s rhythms and I feel the most expressive I have ever felt in my life here.

AMBY: Is Lovelife just a name, or a new outlook?

LN: We called it Lovelife because me and Ally met at a time where we were both…let’s say…recovering from tough relationships.

AMBY: How do you and Ally balance the songwriting duties?

LN: I write lyrics/melodies, Ally writes music. Sam and Frank write as well. We all have our roles.

AMBY: Lovelife have been playing a lot of shows in New York recently, and we’d love to see you up here in Canada! What are your plans as far as touring?

LN: That’s something we’re working on right now. There will be a special London date in December which we will announce soon. As for Canada, I imagine next year.

AMBY: You’ve released a few singles, so is there an album in the works and when can we expect to see it?

LN: We write and record everything ourselves in our own apartment. So as it costs us nothing to produce, we release everything for free. As soon as we’ve finished something, we’ll put it up for people to hear. This is something that we pride ourselves on. So as far as an album is concerned, it’s not something we’re thinking about right now.

AMBY: I have to tell you Lee, Tonight (We’re Taking Our Own Lives) is such a fetching song! Where did this funkiness come from?

LN: Fetching! I will take that as a compliment! Thank you. Who knows where it comes from.

AMBY: If you could invite three people over to dinner, who would you choose?

LN: Gary Oldman, Gary Numan and Gary Neville.

AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?

LN: Baa Baa Black Sheep by Gotye

AMBY: We share a love for all things Morrissey and The Smiths. Which Smiths song would you say describes you best?

LN: I Want The One I Cant Have

AMBY: Which song’s the best of 2012 so far?

LN: The Mother We Share by CHVRCHES

AMBY: The music’s changed, the location’s changed, and it’s apparent change is unavoidable! But what’s the one thing about you that will never change?

LN: My fingerprint.

AMBY: And lastly, tell me something about you that nobody knows yet.

LN: I’m really a man.

Lovelife have just announced today that there is an upcoming EP titled The Fourth Floor which will be released December 10th. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for Lovelife, but for now, take a listen to the dance provoking Tonight (We’re Taking Our Own Lives)! And last but not least, thank you so much Lee, for taking the time to gimme your answers!
