Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Delphic

An interview with Richard Boardman of Delphic!

Delphic happen to be one of those groups with extremely catchy songs and irresistible melodies. A couple years back, I went through the craziest Delphic phase where I’d play their debut album Acolyte on repeat all of the time. With their new album finished and excitement in the air to hear new material, we caught up with the band’s Richard Boardman!

AMBY: For those who haven’t had the treat of hearing you, how would you describe Delphic’s sound in three words?

RB: Listen and hear….

AMBY: You’ve been working on a new album over the past while, how’s it going and what’s to be expected?

RB: It’s finished now, which is a massive relief, it’s been an arduous process – we came off tour and thought we’d get it done within 6 months and couldn’t have been more wrong. In terms of what can be expected, it’s definitely a step forward, a different sound, but one we’re excited by and we hope you will be too.

What’s your favourite track off of Acolyte and why?

RB: Ironically, it’s probably Ephemera, because it’s the song we played least live and so haven’t heard a few hundred times!

AMBY: What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had this summer while touring?

RB: Sadly we did not do any touring this summer, we’re looking forward to getting back out on the road though and making some new memories (awwww).

AMBY: Speaking of touring and gigs, what are the top three live shows you’ve seen in your life?

RB: In no particular order, Radiohead at South Park in Oxford, Massive Attack at an Austrian festival (the name of which escapes me), and Kraftwerk at Manchester Apollo.

AMBY: What are your biggest non-musical influences?

RB: The way the birds sing in the morning and when leaves fall from the trees every autumn… That and powerful hallucinogens.

AMBY: What trend in music do you find most annoying?

RB: Any ‘trend’.

AMBY: Good Life was a real hit at the Olympics this year, congrats! What would you say is your proudest achievement to date?

RB: I think just being allowed to make music is a pretty proud achievement.

AMBY: Doubt was my dance song of the year in 2010, I still love it. What’s a track you can’t get enough of?

RB: There’s a song by Robert Wyatt that I don’t know the name of, it starts with a piano and a woman singing ‘do do do’…. But I could listen to that on repeat all day, it’s very soothing.

AMBY: Who would you like to be stuck most and least in an elevator with?

RB: Most: Elevator repair man

Least: Mr Creosote and a wafer thin mint

AMBY: Which band would you like to see reform?

RB: The Beatles

AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?

RB: Jai Paul – Jasmine

AMBY: Lastly, tell me something about the band that nobody knows yet.

RB: Matt’s real name is Matt Cool but he wanted a more rock and roll name so changed it to Cocksedge.

Delphic are currently on tour playing select gigs, be sure to catch them if you can and keep your eyes and ears open for the release of their new album! And of course, thanks for much Richard for giving me your answers!
