Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Antics

An Interview with Gaz Openshaw of The Antics!

In England there’s been a resurgence of guitar-powered bands. Fueled by a wonderful energy and the ability to write catchy yet witty anthemic songs, The Antics are one of the bands at the forefront of this movement. We wanted to find out what’s new with the band, so we caught up with friend and charismatic vocalist Gaz Openshaw!

AMBY: Hello Gaz, thanks for taking the time to do this interview! I hear you’re in the studio working hard on some new tracks! What can us Antics fans expect for the album?

GO: Ello, our music is all about having fun and about the comedowns and consequences of havin too much fun. we don’t take ourselves too seriously! We have a party in the studio..the vibe of the room can make our mind up about a track! if we’re dancing around its a winner, if we’re not, we work on something new!

AMBY: And how would you describe the upcoming album in three words?

AMBY: There’s a really neat energy expressed through your music! Where do you think this comes from?

GO: Our music reflects our personalities….We possess a lot of great energy which most of the time stems from us being drunk haha.

AMBY: Down On You is a wicked tune and that bass is so addictive. What’s the story behind the song?

GO: Me and Matt were outside smoking when we heard this bass sound….Sean had written that riff..we were blown away! (we now refer to it as the baby making bassline) We went back into the studio and Matty just sang “hey girl coming over” over the top. The rest is musical history ha.

AMBY: Which Antics lyric do you really dig?

GO: I dig different lyrics… Some mean more than others to me! The lyrics on Morning Light reflect how sometimes you can party and have fun with a girl but emotionally it don’t work! This is something that’s happened with me a lot *tears ;)

My favourite lyrics I’ve ever written are on a track called Party’s Over. Which has the line “we are the devil that lives on your shoulder”. Which if you ever have the chance to party with us you will understand that this is the truth haha…We’re wrong.

AMBY: Your YouTube Channel is full of humourous and fun videos, so I have to ask: What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to the band at a live show?

GO: On the last tour with the enemy their road crew decided to tape Sean to a chair and leave him onstage whilst the first band were sound checking…there’s a video on our YouTube channel…it looks very sinister.

AMBY: You’re good friends with the guys in The Enemy. What’s the deal behind the bromance Gaz?!

GO: Tom Clarke is a big fan of our sound, he even let us rehearse in his house for ages! but, he got pissed off with the amount of rubbish we’d leave behind! We are also big enemy fans so when he has an opinion or an idea about our band we listen! Plus he also has a large whiskey cabinet that he’s not afraid to open ;)

AMBY: Who’s the best band in the world? …And who’s the worst?

GO: Best band in the world hmmmmm for me although they’re not actually still together it’s got to be The Smiths… Fuck the haters, if anyone ever says they’re boring or suicidal they’re clearly not clever enough to understand what Morrisey is saying.

Worst band….. Just every band that’s got together for the wrong reasons… I got into a band to get girls and have fun… The bands that take themselves too seriously need to be more like me ha.

AMBY: If The Antics were to cover any song, which would it be and why?

GO: Well on the last tour we did a cover of The Farm tune Altogether Now. Went down really well… On record I’m not too sure how well it would sound.. Which for me goes for most covers! I think live it’s cool but on record sounds forced.

AMBY: What are the top three live shows you’ve seen in your life?

GO: PRIMAL SCREAM @ Leamington Assembly was just incredible. JUSTICE @ Birmingham Academy insane… Watch across the universe on YouTube. JAMES BLUNT @ Amsterdam Heieneken Arena haha, this wasn’t for the show itself.. It was for the aftershow… We partied with him and his band on their tour bus all the way to Paris.

AMBY: What trend in music do you find the most annoying?

GO: When radio stations are dictated to by the X-Factor generation.

AMBY: If you could invite three people to dinner who would you choose?

GO: LINDSEY LOHAN, CHARLIE SHEEN and me mate SMURF…Wouldn’t need to cook anything then haha ;)

AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?

GO: STATES OF EMOTION- The Unsung. Great tune great lads.

AMBY: And lastly, tell me something about you that nobody knows… Yet!

GO: I lost my virginity to a boglin (Google it).

The Antics are to play the Cherry Cola (Purple Turtle) in Camden, London this Saturday, December 1st! They put on one hell of a show so make it down there if you want a night of fantastic music! Also check out their rad track Got Skills below, it also has a pretty neat video. Lastly, thanks very much Gaz, for giving us your answers!
