Katy Goodman has been an integral part of the indie rock scene for a while now. Whether playing bass in the upstart kick ass Vivian Girls or fronting her dreamy solo project La Sera, she has carved a niche that only she can fill. We wanted to see what she was up to so we got a hold of her while recently out on tour with Father John Misty to find out.
AMBY: Hi Katy, how have you been and what have you been up to?
KG: Hey! I’m good! Just finishing up a month long full US tour with Father John Misty. Currently driving to Denver.
AMBY: Sees The Light was a splendid album. What are your feelings about it now that you’ve had time to reflect on it?
KG: I still really love the album, even though I haven’t heard it in a while. I feel like I accomplished everything I set out to do.
AMBY: Which three La Sera songs have to be on everyone’s player?
KG: I think my favorite 3 songs are Love That’s Gone, Break My Heart and a brand new song called Control. But it’s not recorded so it can’t be on your player yet. Soon!
AMBY: You are currently on tour, what is your craziest moment playing live?
KG: My craziest moment playing live ever?! I don’t know, probably crowd surfing while playing bass in Vivian Girls.
AMBY: Please Be My Third Eye is a great song, what is the story behind it?
KG: It’s a song about Telepathic Love, which is in turn my favorite Wipers song. I wrote it as a song that the Misfits would play.
AMBY: What is going on with Vivian Girls?
KG: We have all been doing our own things in 2012, but I think we are going to start doing stuff again in 2013.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
KG: Probably Black Flag- 1st 4 years, Modern Lovers ST, and Smiths- Every Album.
AMBY: If you could cover any song, which would it be and why?
KG: I tend to cover all my favorite songs… But one song I want to cover that I haven’t yet is Dream a Little Dream of Me.
AMBY: What’s on your iPod at the moment?
KG: Right now we are listening to Magic Trick in the van. We are label mates on Hardly Art and we toured with them in July. They are great.
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
KG: I would most like to be stuck in an elevator with Richard Dawkins, because he has a lot to say and would probably be very entertaining. I guess I would least want to be stuck with the Devil (like in the movie Devil)
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
KG: Best song of 2012? Say Your Name by Magic Trick.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Katy Goodman that nobody knows yet?
KG: I can recite pi to over 30 digits.
