Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Fauns

The FaunsWe’re fans of The Fauns, and we don’t mean Henry Winkler The Fonz! With their definitive brand of indie noisepop, The Fauns are a band that you should be listening to. They capture imagination and put it into music. When we had the chance to interview them, we couldn’t pass it up! So read this to check out what the band has been up to!

AMBY: For those who haven’t had the pleasure of hearing you, how would you describe The Fauns’ sound in three words?

The Fauns: Lost love found.

AMBY: You are currently working on album number two, how has the band evolved since the first record?

The Fauns: On the live side we’ve slimmed from six to five members, recording wise the second album is much more of a group effort. The first album charted me learning how to record and write so it’s a bit of a bumpy ride. The second album is really coherent.

AMBY: If you could cover any song, which would it be and why?

The Fauns: Another Day by Roy Harper… but it would specifically be a cover of the Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush version, it’s heartbreaking (the video is on YouTube and nowhere else, check it out).

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

The Fauns: MBV Isn’t Anything, The The Infected and John Williams’ Star Wars soundtrack

AMBY: Your tour with Ringo Deathstarr was unfortunately cancelled, will there be another tour in the works?

The Fauns: Yes definitely but we’re going to try and tie it in with the release of the second album. It’s more likely that we’ll do a series of short tours rather than one long one, we have very good contacts in Europe, Japan and the US who have offered to help.

AMBY: What can people expect at your live shows?

The Fauns: If I’m honest it’s all about the music, we don’t really have a “band image” and we don’t leap about or throw shapes. Our aim is to provoke an emotional response from the audience with beautiful melancholic songs.

AMBY: The Sun Is Cruising off your debut record is a great song. What is the story behind it?

The Fauns: It’s the second track I ever wrote, about losing someone and then finding them again… just as the sun sets and then rises. I have a good friend in the US to thank for the title. I asked what the weather was like in Arizona and she said “The sun is cruising ( today)”. I think that title is unique for a song which is kind of cool.

AMBY: How would you define success for yourselves as a band?

The Fauns: At the moment it’s the little things like having a sound engineer who does a great job or when audience members cry at certain songs. On a bigger scale… I guess appearing on a film soundtrack would be something.

AMBY: Who’s the best band in the world? …And who’s the worst?

The Fauns: I really love The The… Matt Johnson is a genius… To be honest I don’t think I can pick a worst band, it takes guts to get out there and do it whether you are good or bad and who am I to judge anyway? I can pick a genre though… The “donk” house genre is the worst form of music I’ve ever heard, it’s so bad I actually went blind ;)

AMBY: Describe your dream gig and who would be on the bill with you.

The Fauns: I’d love to play on the same bill as Loop but I know it won’t happen… They were an incredible live act, simply jaw dropping. If I could resurrect another band for the same bill it would be The Sundays, I would love to hear Can’t Be Sure live.

AMBY: Who influences The Fauns as musicians and songwriters?

The Fauns: It’s very broad… 90s indie, soundtracks, grunge, poetry, comics, electronica, classical… even some trance music. I listen out for deep and interesting chord changes in whatever genre I happen to be dipping into. I own a record shop with 45,000 records so I’m constantly being influenced.

AMBY: What is the best song of 2012 so far?

The Fauns: College A Real Hero as heard on the Drive soundtrack.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Fauns that nobody knows yet?

The Fauns: At one point we discussed creating a fake manager to front the business side of the band… he was going to be called Blake Fletcher (ha ha).. and then we all realised simultaneously how totally and completely stupid the idea was… So we didn’t do it.

If you’d like to hear a great tune, take a listen to The Sun Is Cruising! And of course, thanks a bunch The Fauns for giving us your answers!

  1. I’m really happy to hear there is another Fauns rekkid in the works. I have been wondering. Please tell, which member of the Fauns answered the questions and which instrument does that person play in the group? Thanks…
