If you are looking for a band with clever lyrics and crisply tight harmonies wrapped in amazing melodies you need to check out The Griswolds. Hailing from Sydney, NSW, this quintet is making some seriously good music as displayed on their Heart of a Lion EP. In one of our funniest interviews, the band talks with AMBY about the Dalai Lama, Django Django and hooking up with the drummer’s mum!
AMBY: How would you describe The Griswolds’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
The Griswolds: Carefree party music meets beach soaked, summer holidays with a plethora of tequila based cocktails.
AMBY: Where did the name The Griswolds come from?
The Griswolds: Our manager hated ‘Weekend At Bernies’ and ‘Palms’ was taken, The Griswolds just happened one night while we were recording Heart of a Lion.
AMBY: Heart Of A Lion is a splendid song, what is the story behind it?
The Griswolds: It actually started off as a song about Count Dracula, it had a completely different melody and lyrics, but we liked that it was a song about a world renowned, evil sorta character. We also liked that the lyrics were trying to capture Dracula’s misunderstood side, like he was a bad guy, but he had good motives that just turned bad. Anyway in the end we ditched the whole Dracula thing and used the name Steve Levine instead and made it more relevant to modern culture.
AMBY: Does hailing from Sydney, New South Wales influence your music and if so, how?
The Griswolds: I guess so, we love and listen to a lot of bands from Sydney and Australia, so i guess they’ve probably had an influence on us in some way. We love music from anywhere and everywhere though, so it has all played a part in influencing our sound and individual playing styles.
AMBY: You have recently released your EP, Heart Of A Lion. What does the band have planned for 2013?
The Griswolds: We’re currently playing with ideas for another film clip for Summer Preasley and at the same time we’re recording another single hopefully to be released around April/May. The single will hopefully be a part of an album that we’ll release in 2013 too.
AMBY: You just did a show with Django Django, how was that experience?
The Griswolds: Amazing! Such a great band to play alongside, they were really seasoned musicians with great live sounds, super tight too. It taught us a lot. They were also really great guys to hang out with, hopefully we can score another gig with them some day.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
The Griswolds: Alt-J, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Metronomy, Flume, Tame Impala
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
The Griswolds: The Dalai lama, Jimmy Page & Kanye West
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
The Griswolds: The Belligerents.
AMBY: I hear Robbie got arrested the other day. How about telling us what happened?
The Griswolds: Apparently Robbie looks like a wanted criminal, Cops arrested him and pinned him to the ground before realizing it was just Robbie, humble Synth player of the Griswolds.
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
The Griswolds: That’s a toughie, maybe Get Free by Major Lazor, that’s an amazing track!
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Griswolds that nobody knows yet?
The Griswolds: I regularly hook up with our drummer’s mum and he doesn’t seem to have a problem with it
You have to take a listen to The Griswolds’ song Heart Of A Lion, it is spectacular! And thank you very much The Griswolds, for giving us your answers!
