LA group Mates are combining their own indie flare with personal musical influences from across the pond. My first impression of their song Impressions was… impressive! So wanting to know a little more about the band, Mates took the time to speak with AMBY about British influences, free food and pseudonyms!
AMBY: How would you describe Mates’ sound to those not familiar with your music?
Mates: I’d say Mates is summer music. It’s basically guitar riffs and cool melodiousness. It reminds me of the beach, which is funny cause we’re originally from the desert and most of the material was written in the winter.
AMBY: Where did the name Mates come from?
Mates: Mates is a simple name and we’re a simple band. It rolls off the tongue so easy and the word itself is just so agreeable with people. Plus it can mean so many things like friends, lovers, sex, whatever. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who hasn’t liked the name. People in the UK probably hate the name though, ha.
AMBY: Your music video for Impressions has had 2, 000 views on it! Such a good video and song. What was the best moment you had while making the video?
Mates: Thanks! That’s actually the first Mates song I ever wrote. The best part of making that video was this lady who was walking around filming everyone on her iPad. During one of our songs she came up and started filming my face. It was hilarious. I think you can still see her in the video somewhere.
AMBY: I’ve noticed many of the bands you like are from across the pond. With that, which three groups would you say influence you the most?
Mates: My biggest British influences are probably Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, and The Maccabees.
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Mates: I wish there was a law that forced every business to give me free food whenever I wanted it.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
Mates: My dream gig would be to open for The Strokes.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Mates: I’ve actually been listening to a lot of rap from Queens, NY. Specifically the rapper Despot.
AMBY: What was the first concert you attended and what was that experience like?
Mates: The first concert I ever went to was a Strokes concert in 2007 for First Impressions Of Earth. It was the first time I actually heard all the different guitar parts layered over each other. It was mind blowing. I remember saying to myself, “oh that’s how you write songs.”
AMBY: What is the best song of 2012?
Mates: That’s a tough one so I’ll just choose my favorite song from my favorite album of 2012. Cruising FDR by Oberhofer.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Mates that nobody knows yet?
Mates: Manny is a pseudonym.
Have a listen to Mates’ Impressions below! And thank you Mates, for giving me your answers!
