Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Findlay

FindlayFindlay are a raw assault hailing from Manchester. After taking a listen to the throbbing and thrusting track Your Sister, we felt compelled to find out more. AMBY caught up with Natalie Findlay to talk about getting punched after a show, Jake Bugg and great jerk chicken.

AMBY: How would you describe Findlay’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Findlay: I’d probably describe Findlay’s sound as a mix of garage rock, blues, with kinda jazzy pop melodies. heavy guitars and I put a lot of time into my lyrics.

AMBY: I hear you have been recording your debut album. What does the band have planned for 2013?

Findlay: I’ve been recording a lot of songs and writing as well. We may release an EP before the album. Had a good start to the year getting back into the studio and finishing stuff and playing a sold out show at Soup Kitchen in my hometown in Manchester was a great feeling. As for the rest of the year I’m taking each thing as it comes I really want to release more records and tour more. I will definitely be releasing more music this year so that’s exciting.

AMBY: Your Sister is a wicked song, what is the story behind it?

Findlay: I’ve had this song for a while I think I wrote it about an old film I saw where a guy was cheating on his wife with his mistress and every time he went to his mistress he told his wife he was going to see his “sister” and she figures out she’s not his sister, she’s his lover.

AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?

Findlay: The funniest thing that happened at a gig was probably getting punched after a show in Newcastle in a travel lodge at 3 in the morning whilst we were touring with Jake Bugg.It always makes me laugh during gigs when guys shout get your tits out and stuff. they’re usually mingers.

AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?

Findlay: Legalize weed.

AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?

Findlay: My dream gig would be to play at some of the festivals. Glastonbury would be amazing and some foreign festivals. playing a show then being able to go in the sea or chill in the sun would be amazing. Coachella, SXSW… my dream would be to play all of them!!

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Findlay: Been listening to a great band called Foxygen, a band called Goat who have an amazing album. I love the band Temple Songs from Manchester they supported us at Soup Kitchen in Manchester earlier this week I think they are going to go far. Also played a couple of time with a band called The Death Rays of Ardilla who are a two piece – really really cool sound and they are amazing live.

AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?

Findlay: There’s quite a lot of Christmas songs I overplayed last month. I love them in December and hate them in January. I love Christmas though I’m not the grinch

AMBY: You recently did some dates with Jake Bugg. How was that experience for you?

Findlay: The Jake Bugg tour was amazing I love touring and to tour with Jake was great because he’s such a cool guy and his music’s great so every night I got to watch a great show and get drunk and travel with my band. We watched a lot of shit films, listened to loads of music and ate loads of pasties… touring/s great I can’t wait to hopefully tour outside of the UK. Some of my friends in bands are always bragging about how great touring in Europe is. All the venues cook you dinner haha

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Findlay: Like I said I’m taking each day as it comes I just want to release more records and have a good time. I’m excited for some other bands albums to come out. Can’t wait to hear more from The Growlers, Foxygen , Unknown Mortal Orchestra I think their albums are coming out about now and I think The Strokes are releasing something.. And fucking hell David Bowie is releasing a new album that’s got to be incredible.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Findlay that nobody knows yet?

Findlay: I make really great jerk chicken and I have a cat called Iggy.
