Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Verdigrls

VerdigrlsSisters Anna and Catherine Wolk are making some remarkable music together. Collectively known as Verdigrls, this duo have stretched out into unknown musical territory. Hints of classical laced with electronica and entrenched in an indie ethic, you end up with what the bands coins electro-chamber pop. Having just released their latest demo, the lovely What Did I Do?, Verdigrls spoke to AMBY about Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Japanese, and Morrissey hair.

AMBY: How would you describe Verdigrls’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Verdigrls: Verdigrls’s sound is interesting. We both have a fascination with electro-pop, but have classical training in cello and violin. When combining these two elements you get electro-chamber pop. It’s both chill and catchy, experimental and basic. It’s a different sound than any other band.

AMBY: Japanese is such a fine song, what is the story behind it?

Verdigrls: Japanese is the first song we ever wrote together. We wrote the song while still in our old band and was almost on their album, until we left and took the song with us. The lyrics themselves are about social isolation and the failiure to function normally in society because of being apprehensive and introverted. It’s an ode to apathetic awkwardness.

AMBY: Is there an album in the works?

Verdigrls: We are recording our first EP in the studio right now between college classes.

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?

Verdigrls: I would most like to be stuck in an elevator with Sabrina the Teenage Witch because she would be able to get us out with her magic powers with a bit of hijinks along the way. I would least like to be stuck in an elevator with Morrissey because even though he’s one of my idols, I feel like he would judge me and not like me much.

AMBY: What do you have planned for 2013?

Verdigrls: We’re not completely sure yet. We have an EP in the works and hope to start touring this year. It’s hard to go into full force because we are still college students, but we are going to try as much as possible.

AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?

Verdigrls: I have thought about this a lot. I would love to do a show with nothing but bands with sister in it. Headlining would be Tegan and Sara (Hearthrob is awesome) and playing with them would be Haim, TEEN, and us.

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Verdigrls: I work at a radio station at my college and I just got STFKR’s new album in pre-release. It’s awesome. You have to listen to it.

AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?

Verdigrls: Probably to 1960’s London, early 60’s. I think I’d fit in better there than where I am now.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Verdigrls: Our new EP, the beginning of touring, our new name, the fact that I survived the apocalypse…

AMBY: What is your biggest turn on?

Verdigrls: Guy wise? Probably great hair. Morrissey hair is my downfall. *Swoon*

AMBY: What is you biggest turn off?

Verdigrls: Undeserved narcissism, nothings worse than a loser who thinks he’s all that.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Verdigrls that nobody knows yet?

Verdigrls: We are looking for a new drummer.

Thank you Verdigrls, for giving us your answers!
