Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Last Dinosaurs

Last DinosaursDanceable, melodic, and sincere. These are some qualities Australia’s Last Dinosaurs absolutely excel at perfecting when it comes to songwriting. The first song we heard by them was Andy— a song so rich in atmosphere, and infectious with its vocals. And now, we practically know all their music inside-out. So to see what Last Dinosaurs have been up to, AMBY spoke with the band about album number two, touring, and how the members are dashing, debonair, dapper and delicious!

AMBY: Hey Last Dinosaurs! Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. What’s the band been up to lately?

Last Dinosaurs: I’m in the green room at a university gig we’re playing tonight in Sydney, NSW. This is the second last show of our current tour. Then we are off to our farm to finish writing the second album, we’ve given ourselves a six week period to get the bulk of it together. Looking forward to getting into the studio again sometime this year.

AMBY: What’s a word for each band member that describes their personality?

Last Dinosaurs: Sean- Dashing, Dan- Debonair, Lach- Dapper, Sam- Delicious

AMBY: Where did the name Last Dinosaurs come from?

Last Dinosaurs: A Japanese band called The Pillows have a song called Last Dinosaur, just nicked it from them. The other three guys are all half-Japanese and we really love the culture. We’re all going on holidays there in a few months which will be great.

AMBY: Andy has become one of my favourite tracks. It covers all aspects of a great song; you can sing it, dance to it and never get tired of it. What’s a song you’ll never get tired of?

Last Dinosaurs: 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins.

AMBY: Your debut album In A Million Years is stellar. Which tracks are your favourite off it and why?

Last Dinosaurs: Repair, I remember the writing process for it. It came about a week before we went into the studio to record the album. To me it felt like the most organic song in terms of writing, we just kept playing and it felt like the song almost wrote itself, told us where to take it.

AMBY: You’ll be playing many shows in Australia this year! Are there any plans to cross over to North America?

Last Dinosaurs: Definitely, we’re currently putting together a team to represent us in America, I think our plan is to have the album out in a few months. We’re really excited to hit the road in America and see as much as we possibly can. Lots of our friends are over there for SXSW, we want to slowly build some buzz over there before we make our way as it’s so expensive to get there from Australia.

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?

Last Dinosaurs: I’d most like to be stuck in an elevator with an elevator repair man. I’d least like to be stuck in an elevator with a crying baby… yeeesh.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Last Dinosaurs: I’m looking forward to the new Phoenix album, “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” got us all very excited and inspired. Also D’angelo’s new record (hopefully it’ll come out this year), he’s made me wait over 13 years so I have high expectations. As long as Pino Palladino is back on the bass I’ll be happy.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Last Dinosaurs that nobody knows yet?

Last Dinosaurs: We’re halfway through writing our second album and it’s sounding ultra tasty!
