Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Dumb

Dumb BannerBirmingham’s music scene has been crazy lately! A great addition to this scene is Dumb- “4 guys who really enjoy writing music”. Their song Dive is a lovely tune, and recently releasing the song’s music video, we had to let the world know more about the band! Now it’s time to find out for yourself why Dumb are fantastic. So, check out our interview with them where we talk about two members being madly in love, how Dive‘s video is an “eruption of nostalgia and euphoria”, and new bands to watch out for!

AMBY: Hey there Dumb! What’s the band been up to lately?

Dumb: Hey, we have just been writing and writing as much as we can really. We wrote our whole set in the space of about 6 weeks which is cool because it means everything is really coherent. It almost feels like we have wrote an album to play live. We played KOKO at club NME the other week as well which was cool. But by far the best thing we have done lately was we played at our mate jack’s house party with our mates God Damn and Wide Eyed and Bad Moon and a few others. It was insane man. People crowd surfing from the living room to the kitchen. Real fun! NME turned up too.

AMBY: I love how the bio on your website just says, “We are Dumb.” But for a little bit of an introduction, who are Dumb?

Dumb: We are just 4 guys who are really enjoying writing music right now.

AMBY: Who or what influences your sound? Umm this is always a bit of a tricky one to answer because influences change all the time. I think the main influences for us at the moment are bands like Built to Spill and Weezer.

AMBY: How did the band come up with the name Dumb?

Dumb: Well we all came up ideas and like wrote them all down but typically we couldn’t all agree on one name we liked. What we could all agree on though were which of the ideas were pretty bad, so we went with the best of the bad ones ha ha!

AMBY: We love Dive. What’s the track about?

Dumb: Ah cheers man. I think it’s about like feeling a bit drowned by familiar surroundings and just a feeling of need for adventure once in a while. I went travelling with Tom out the band and a few of our mates last Summer which was an insane experience. We had the greatest time ever, I fell in love on that holiday… but yeah our travels were a definite inspiration for the song.

AMBY: A video for Dive will be coming up soon! What should we be expecting?

Dumb: A crazy eruption of nostalgia and euphoria.

AMBY: What’s a lyric you’ll never get enough of?

Dumb: I always love listening to Johnny Foreigner’s lyrics. I can’t think of one off the top of my head but they are soo cool.

AMBY: Birmingham has been having a great music scene as of lately. Who are some bands you think our readers should keep an eye on?

Dumb: Yeah it’s really exciting in Birmingham at the moment and it’s great to be a part of it. I think the whole ‘B-Town’ thing should be dropped though! Don’t get me wrong I love some of the music coming out of bands such as Peace, but to tag every single thing that comes out of the city with the same thing I think can be quite damaging. It means people expect the same sound from all the bands which isn’t great. Birmingham has different things to offer as well. Look out for Superfood and Wide Eyed, two great bands doing things a bit differently.

AMBY: If you could tour with anyone, who would it be and why?

Dumb: I would love to tour with Superfood. Their music is soo exciting and they are just great people as well, it would be a laff.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Dumb: Everything! The prospect of another year of great new music in Brum is really exciting.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Dumb that nobody knows yet?

Dumb: Tom and Adam are madly in love.
