Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Playlounge

PlayloungePlaylounge are wicked indie garage-pop. The music is upbeat and driven, while their lyrics are absolutely crazy- blunt, humourous, yet clever all at the same time. So Laurie and Saam took the time to chat with AMBY about their rad lyrics, new material, and all things Playlounge!

AMBY: How would you describe Playlounge sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Saam: Regardless of how much punk or emo or Joanna gruesome we’re listening to we’re just trying to write pop songs.

AMBY: Cream Soda is a cool tune with a ton of energy, what is the story behind it?

Saam: I was going through a lot of changes in terms of my circle of friends and the girls breaking my heart, then we went on tour with Joanna gruesome and fantasy rainbow and nothing else mattered more than those adventures. Cream Soda is sort of about that, about not letting a little heartache ruin yr adventures.

AMBY: The lyrics from Seahorse, “I get so bored; his floor was littered with culture. Sick bed. Bed head. I’d eat your eyelids” are really interesting. Who inspires you as a lyricist?

Saam: I grew up on Jesse Lacey and Adam Lazzara so there’s always an element of (hopefully) witty self indulgence to what I write. I’ve also always been really into more abstract lyricists like Kurt Cobain and Peter Helmis. I don’t really have anything important to say but saying it is important. words are important.

AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?

Laurie: The time that Yucky Slime & co. took their clothes off and jumped on Saam.

AMBY: What does Playlounge have planned for this year?

Saam: We’ve recently written a lot of new material which we’re hoping to record in the next couple of months. We can’t really say what we’re doing with that yet though. We’re also planning a few more tours with some of our favourite bands so the UK and Europe will be seeing us pretty soon.

AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?

Laurie: A friend. // An enemy.

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Saam: I’m really into The Van Pelt at the moment. They’re amazing. As well as Julliard, California X, Something, Modest Mouse, Slint, Brand New and Nai Harvest.

Laurie: Fawn Spots, Orca Team and yesterday I remembered how much I like The Thermals. That was nice.

AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?

Saam: Milan Kundera, Adam Brody, and Daria Morgendorffer.

Laurie: Lorelai, Rory and Lane. It would beat the pants off Richard and Emily’s dinners.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Saam: Everything really. 2012 was amazing for us but I already know this year will be better.

Laurie: Touring and stuff.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Playlounge that nobody knows yet?

Saam: We formed this band because of our mutual love for the band william and one day at a house party – after having become friends with them- Mark the bass player asked us if he could join Playlounge but because we’d made a pact it would only ever be the two of us, we had to turn him down.
