Brisbane’s The Belligerents create atmospheric indie-pop which is easy to surround yourself in. Whether it’s how flawlessly their songs flow, or how the vibes will get you moving to each beat, The Belligerents can write a seriously unique and fetching song. The music makes your imagination wander into new heights, and you can’t wait to hear more. AMBY also couldn’t wait to discover more about The Belligerents, so we spoke with the band about funny haircuts and beards, The Thong Song, and all things The Belligerents!
AMBY: How would you describe The Belligerents’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
The Belligerents: It’s upbeat dance music with a growing tendency towards psychedelic pop.
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
The Belligerents: At our second show ever Andy pulled down my pants while we were on stage. Not so funny for me but it must have been pretty entertaining for everybody else…
AMBY: She Calls The Shots is a very cool song, what is the story behind it?
The Belligerents: It’s about a controlling ex-girlfriend. It’s about realising that the relationship is kind of slowly failing because of the girl being so manipulative. I think there is a bit of hope in there as well, kind of saying there’s a chance but you have to change if that makes sense?
AMBY: If you were a heavy metal band whom would you be?
The Belligerents: Shit I don’t know, I haven’t listened to heavy metal since I was about 13 so I guess I’ll just go with Metallica? They have funny haircuts and beards too which is a bonus.
AMBY: What does the band have planned for this year?
The Belligerents: We just released the first taste of our forthcoming third EP (https://soundcloud.com/the-belligerents/ghost-vs). Our first official single off that record is going to be out on May 10th. Then we’ll do the usual touring and depending on how we go I think we might start writing for an album at the end of the year….
AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?
The Belligerents: Hahaha there is so many to choose from! I think I’ll go with The Thong Song by Sisqo.
AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?
The Belligerents: Tame Impala. We played a festival with them a few months ago but doing an actual support for them would be unreal.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
The Belligerents: Tame Impala, The Maccabees, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and MGMT
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
The Belligerents: Pharell Williams, Thom Yorke and Bradford Cox. That would be a pretty entertaining dinner I assume.
AMBY: What’s your proudest achievement to date?
The Belligerents: Playing Parklife last year was absolutely incredible. Performing on a stage that big and being able to hang out and chat with bands that we love felt unreal.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
The Belligerents: We’re all really excited about the new music we’re putting out. It’s different to our old stuff and it feels fresh. We’ve tested out a few of the songs live and the reaction has been awesome, so we can’t wait to release the actual EP.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Belligerents that nobody knows yet?
The Belligerents: Andy and Jimmy hate olives for some reason and Lewis is a passionate Scientologist (he’s not really but it would be cool if he was).
Thank you The Belligerents, for giving us your answers!
