Oxford’s Spring Offensive create soothing, rhythmic music with harmonies that are so delicate they can be bone-chilling. And yea, AMBY likes music that has that unexpected affect on us. AMBY caught up with Spring Offensive’s Matt and Lucas to chat about attaching a camera to dancers, “Being Spring Offensive”, and playing a show to a dog!
AMBY: How would you describe Spring Offensive’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Spring Offensive: It depends on who they are. If they are elderly, I talk about the harmonies and story-telling in the vocals. Maybe chuck in the fact we use a classical guitar for one song sometimes. If they are middle aged, I maybe mumble something like ‘a bit like the National, or Efterklang, alternative rock, guitar based, indie without the posing etc’. Name check a few made up bands so they nod and feel uncomfortable. If they are 16 or under I talk about all the catchy guitar riffs being like ringtones and the fact we dance on stage like idiots.
AMBY: So what does the band have planned next as far as releases go?
Spring Offensive: We’re working on a new single, which will be out in the summer. We’re also looking at the bigger picture though, and an album is coming into shape somewhere on the horizon…
AMBY: No Assets is such a cool song, what is the story behind it?
Spring Offensive: Thank you! We move house a lot. In fact, everyone seems to spend their early twenties dragging the same shit from house to house. Slowly it gains mass as you collect more and more of it. Usually pretty worthless stuff. Anything of value gets pretty out-of-date very quickly.
It’s about laying it all out and releasing that you have very little connection with any of it. Or at least thinking about your connections with it all. You would get next to no money if you sold any of it, you can’t keep carrying it with you, but you can’t bring yourself to throw it away. Pretty first world domestic concerns really when you look at it.
AMBY: The video for the song is pretty amazing. Where did the idea come from?
Spring Offensive: Thanks! Attaching a camera to dancers was something we were talking about for a while, and trying to figure out the best way of doing it. When the time to do a video for No Assets came round, it seemed the perfect fit. Everything thereafter was putting in long hard hours coming up with the best things that would work in the grid.
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Spring Offensive: Most musicians and creative’s are not hanging on to a childish dream of being ‘rock-stars’ or being famous. Some are. But a lot aren’t. It is valid. It is a valid job. Support that, or shut the fuck up.
AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?
Spring Offensive: We tend to go out to other gigs, or sit around drinking for hours talking about nothing. The challenge is doing that without spending any money. That’s the fun bit actually.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Spring Offensive: A Silver Mt. Zion- Horses in the Sky, I Like Trains- Elegies to Lessons Learnt, The Cooper Temple Clause- Kick up the Fires and Let the Flames Break Loose
AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called ?
Spring Offensive: Being Spring Offensive. It would be about our past lives, which interconnect in a artful and convincing way with the band’s current existence, and the final scene would feature our dramatic and noble deaths.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Spring Offensive: Everything Everything, Efterklang, Peter and Kelly, Villagers, Salvation Bill, Gunning for Tamar, Richard Walters, The National, Andrew Bird, The Maccabees, Ghostpoet.
AMBY: What is the funniest thing to happen to you at one of your gigs?
Spring Offensive: We played to a dog. The dog left after two songs. This was a long time ago. We’re still laughing now.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Spring Offensive: Finishing the album. Writing more songs. Maybe working on our personal lives and being better humans. I doubt that last bit though.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Spring Offensive that nobody knows yet?
Spring Offensive: We are the most pedantic and least hedonistic band we have ever met. Maybe everyone knows that.
Thank you Spring Offensive, for giving us your answers!
