Having just released her new single Maps, Panda Su has been busy touring and working on her new album. Panda Su graciously took time out of her busy schedule to have a chat with us, so have a read as she spoke with AMBY about her favourite lyrics, playing in darkness, and how she is actually not a panda!
AMBY: Hello Panda Su! Thanks for having a chat with AMBY, what have you been up to lately?
Panda Su: I’ve just released a new single, ‘Maps’, and have spent the last few weeks playing it live on tour.
AMBY: How would you describe Panda Su’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Panda Su: Dark pop / thoughtful electronica. My music was once described as the love child of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. I’m not really sure why, but I hope they are both proud parents.
AMBY: When will your debut record be released?
Panda Su: It will be released early 2014.
AMBY: Maps is a wonderful song. What is the story behind it?
Panda Su: Thank you. It’s about knowing when something exists, but not being able to find it.
AMBY: What do you consider the best lyric you’ve written?
Panda Su: ‘The problem with myself is that I long to be someone else’.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?
Panda Su: We were waiting to go on stage at a gig when someone tripped the power switch. Not just for the venue, but for the entire town. Houses, street lamps, traffic lights, everything. They must have had a very big foot. We played in darkness. Electronica on acoustic guitar. Don’t try that at home, or in fact anywhere.
AMBY: If you could hang out with any of your influences for a day, who would you choose?
Panda Su: Sufjan Stevens.
AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?
Panda Su: People and situations changed my life – music just provided the soundtrack. If this happened between the ages of 15 and 18, it was usually Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie.
AMBY: What is the best song of the year so far?
Panda Su: Steve Mason – Come To Me / Daughter – Youth
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Panda Su: Working on and recording my album. I’ve got 30 demos, all waiting patiently.
AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?
Panda Su: If you like the music, buy it.
AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Panda Su that nobody knows?
Panda Su: I’m not actually a panda. I hope this won’t affect your decision to buy my music.
Thank you Panda Su, for giving us your answers!
